GLENWOOD CITY — In their only game of the week due to a postponement of one due to bad weather, the Elk Mound girls’ basketball team let a fourth quarter lead slip away and lost 55-52 to Glenwood City on the Hilltoppers’ home court Jan. 17.
A slow start resulted in the Mounders falling behind 12-4 after the first quarter but they poured in 19 points in the second stanza on eight points from Sarah Winchester, five from Kami King, four by Elizabeth Fasbender and two by McKenna McVey. Meanwhile, they held the Hilltoppers to 13 and were down just 25-23 at the break.
They fell behind by as much as seven points in the second half but pulled ahead by six points with three minutes left in the game, and even though they matched points with the Toppers in the fourth quarter with 16 each, they couldn’t hang on for the win.
“We didn’t rebound well enough to earn a win,” Elk Mound coach Jordan Kongshaug said.
Problems at the free throw line continue for the Mounders as they hit just 6 of 24 in the game, while the Toppers were a little better with a 9 for 16 performance. Winchester led all scorers with 19 points and Fasbender added 10. Elk Mound hosted St. Croix Central in a make up game Jan. 20 and will travel to Mondovi Jan. 23.
