Colfax to host Dunn-St. Croix Honors Project

Every January top music students from the Dunn-St.Croix conference schools  gather to rehearse and perform in a high school honors band and choir.  Because of the rotation, Colfax only gets to host the Saturday honors concert once every nine years.

Students from the nine participating schools will gather on Wednesday, January 29 to rehearse the music and again on Saturday, February 1 for more rehearsal in the morning and a concert in the afternoon.  This year’s honors band will be conducted by Dr. John Stewart from UW-Eau Claire and the choir by area choir directors.

Students are chosen by application and by conference music teachers based on contributions to their local choirs and bands as well as solo/ensemble and other accomplishments.   Students work on their music at their respective schools in the weeks prior to the January 29 rehearsal.

This year’s choir participants are Andy Buckley, David Blanchard, Jordon Johnson, Alex Hayes, Tucker Hovde, Heidi Lieffort, and Abbie Greenwell.  The band participants are Lydia Almquist, Alyssa Miller, Katie Christoffel, Jessica Moonen, Taylor Shipman, Kaitlin Sauerwein, Katy Toycen, Equality Wilson, Schyler Manning, and Brooke Ponto.

Reflecting on last year’s honors band experience, senior saxophone player Katy Toycen stated “There were so many talented musicians.  The directors were great.”  Looking forward to this year Toycen stated, “I am excited for the big sound.  Some of the songs are fun to play and I am excited to perform for friends and family.”

The public is invited to attend this free concert held Saturday, February 1 at 1:30 pm in the high school gym.  If the current schedule continues, the next time we’ll host the honors project will be 2023 when our current 3rd graders are seniors!  “There is so much talent and time put into this concert,” said Toycen, “It will sound great and it will be cool to see so many students that love music in the same place performing together.”
