The Dunn County Solid Waste Division was recently presented with an Excellence in Recycling Award on behalf of the Recycling Program at the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WI DNR). The 2012 Excellence in Wisconsin Recycling – Project Award recognizes superior recycling efforts that go above and beyond the WI DNR’s expectations.
Established to “encourage and reward communities for doing great recycling work while driving friendly competition to improve programs”, the award was given to Dunn County largely for its “Get Caught Recycling” campaign, spearheaded by Recycling Specialist Amanda Haffele. Once a month, residents with exemplary recycling habits were “caught” at the Transfer Station, Area Collection Stations, curbside recycling, special events and more. They were then presented with gift certificates from local business sponsors of the program. “Get Caught Recycling” winners were featured in local newspapers and on Facebook for their efforts as well.
The Excellence in Recycling Award is part of a pilot program, which the WI DNR hopes will “increase interest in recycling and offer additional positive experiences for local government partners in the state’s recycling program”. The award goes out to the top 10 percent in each region. For the West Central Region, Dunn County was one of only two recipients of this award.
