HAMMOND — Neither team was exactly burning up the nets but the Colfax boys’ basketball team scored enough points and relied on their defense to take a 35-15 win over the St. Croix Central Panthers in Hammond Dec. 17.
Colfax held Central to just two points in both the first and second quarters and took a 20-4 lead into the break. They outscored the Panthers in the final two quarters but both teams were in single digits with the Vikings holding an 8-6 edge in the third and 7-5 in the fourth.
Sawyer DeMoe accounted for more then 50% of the team points with 18 on the night and was the only Viking in double figures. Ethin Kiekhafer collected 10 rebounds while DeMoe had nine and Jeremiah Wait finished with three assists for the game to go with two each from Jared Rudi and Ben Kragness. The Vikings were just 2 for 11 from three point range and 9 for 16 from the foul line. Central connected on an even more dismal 1 for 20 from three point land.
“The kids played hard but it was one of those games where we couldn’t buy a bucket,” coach Garrett Maas said.”We take pride in our defense and it showed tonight. Anytime you can hold a team to four points in a half it shows the effort we have on the defensive end. We did a good job of making them shoot over the top of us and didn’t give up any easy buckets,” he added.
Colfax played at Glenwood City Dec. 20. Details will be in next week’s Messenger.
