Vikings finally get back on court and bounce Bulldogs

BOYCEVILLE — After a 16 day break from competition due to Thanksgiving and a cancellation for bad weather, the Colfax boys were more than ready to get back to the basketball court Friday, Dec. 6. Traveling to Boyceville for their first conference game of the year, they took care of business by halftime and came home with a 62-44 win over the Bulldogs.

Ethin Kiekhafer was a one man wrecking crew early on as he knocked down 13 of the Viking’s 22 first quarter points with a triple, three deuces and four free tosses and with five points by Sawyer DeMoe and a bucket each from Jarrod Rudi and Grant Phillips, Colfax led 22-12. By holding Boyceville to just four points in the second stanza, they led 35-16 at the intermission.

Five of the Vikings’ eight points in the third quarter came from the foul line with DeMoe and Kiekhafer each dropping in a pair and Jeremiah Wait hitting one to go with a Phillips triple for a 43-25 lead, and both teams came up with 19 fourth quarter points, allowing Colfax to finish with the 18 point win. Wait and Kiekhafer came up with six points in the quarter while Jacob Klukas added three and DeMoe and Phillips a deuce apiece.

“I figured we might be a little rusty since we hadn’t played since Nov. 21,” coach Garrett Maas said. “But for the most part I was happy with how we played. After our first two games, we were averaging 15-16 turnovers a game and we set a goal to be in single digits in that area. We did that by having only seven this game. We got a lot of great minutes out of everybody and it was a good team effort,” he added.

Kiekhafer finished the night with 25 points, including a 10 for 10 performance at the foul line while collecting seven rebounds. DeMoe tacked on 15 points with seven boards and Rudi assisted his teammates four times while Wait led in steals with four with three assists. As a team, Colfax was 17 for 21 in free throws and just 3 of 11 from three point land. Their defense held Boyceville sharp shooter Jordan Kuhn to just four points on the night.

Note: The game against Spring Valley has been re-scheduled for Jan. 27 at home.
