EM schools ‘exceed expectations’ on state report card

ELK MOUND —  The Elk Mound School district has exceeded expectations on the state school report card for 2012-2013  from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

According to the final public report from the DPI, the Elk Mound school district achieved an overall score of 73.8 on a scale of 100.

 The benchmark for “exceeds expectations” is a score from 73 to 82.9.

The benchmark for “significantly exceeds expectations” is 83 to 100; meets expectations is 63 to 72.9; meets few expectations is 53 to 62.9; fails to meet expectations is 52.9 and below.

On student achievement, the Elk Mound district earned a score of 70.5 overall, on a scale of 100, compared to a state average of 66.1.

Reading achievement for the district was 32.1 on a scale of 50, compared to a state average of 29.7.

Mathematics achievement was 38.4 on a scale of 50, compared to a state average of 36.5.

Student growth for the district was measured at 76.2 on a scale of 100, compared to a state average of 60.6.

Reading growth exceeded the state average by ten points, with Elk Mound scoring 39.4 on a scale of 50, compared to a state average of 29.9.

Math growth for the district exceeded the state average by six points, with Elk Mound scoring 36.8 on a scale of 50, compared to a state average of 30.7.

ACT scores

Elk Mound High School seniors earned a score of five out of a possible ten points on the ACT participation and performance score.

Of the 42 high school seniors who took the ACT test, 21 students met the reading benchmark; 29 students met the English benchmark; 17 students met the math benchmark; and 13 students met the science benchmark.

Paul Weber, Elk Mound High School principal, told the Elk Mound Board of Education at the October 21 meeting that the high school would be employing “test monitors” this year to circulate during testing to make sure that the students are not just filling in random answers in order to get done with the test as quickly as possible.

Mound View 

Mound View Elementary also exceeded expectations on the state report card with a score of 77.6 on a scale of 73 to 82.9.

In reading achievement, Elk Mound elementary students were right at the state average with a score of 28.7 on a scale of 50.

In math achievement, Mound View students were almost three points above the state average with a score of 40.4 compared to a state average of 37.8.

On student growth in reading and math, Elk Mound students scored about ten points higher than the state average, with reading growth scoring at 43.9, compared to a state average of 33.4, and math growth scoring at 43.9, compared to a state average of 32.3.

On the “closing gaps” measure, Elk Mound elementary students scored higher than the state average on reading achievement with a score of 40.8 on a scale of 50, compared to a state average of 33.2 but scored lower than the state average on math achievement gaps, with a score of 24.4 compared to a state average of 32.4.

Mound View Elementary had an enrollment last year of 501 students, with 8.4 percent listed as having disabilities, 36.3 percent as economically disadvantaged and 5.8 percent with limited English proficiency.

Middle school

Elk Mound Middle School met expectations with a score of 69.7 on a scale of 63 to 72.9 and scored above the state average on reading and math.

On achievement, Elk Mound sixth, seventh and eighth graders scored 33.4 on reading, compared to a state average of 30.7.

In math, Elk Mound students scored 38.4, compared to a state average of 36.7.

On student growth in reading, Elk Mound middle school students scored 35.4, compared to a state average of 25; on math growth, Elk Mound students scored 32.4, compared to a state average of 28.7.

On closing gaps in both reading and math, Elk Mound middle school students scored below the state average, with students in Elk Mound scoring 25.8 on reading gaps, compared to a state average of 33.2, and a score of 20.7 on math achievement gapes, with a state average of 31.3.

Elk Mound Middle School had an enrollment of 331 last year, with 10.6 percent of the students identified as having disabilities, 32.6 percent of the students being economically disadvantaged, and 6 percent of the students with limited English proficiency.

High school

Students at Elk Mound High School in tenth grade also met expectations on the state report card with a score of 71.8 on a scale of 63 to 72.9.

Elk Mound High School students scored 33.9 on a scale of 50 in reading achievement, compared to a state average of 32.5, and scored 34 on math achievement, compared to a state average of 35.3.

The student growth and closing gaps sections of the report card for Elk Mound High School were both listed as being not applicable.

Elk Mound High School had an enrollment last year of 329, with 8.5 percent being listed as students with disabilities, 32.5 percent as economically disadvantaged, and 4.3 percent as having limited English proficiency.

Yearly comparisons

In 2008-2009, 27.5 percent of Elk Mound third graders scored at the proficient or advanced level in reading, compared to 31.3 in 2009-2010, 49.1 percent in 2010-2011, 25.3 percent in 2011-2012, and 36.4 percent in 2012-2013.

Among the Elk Mound eighth graders, 32.5 percent scored at the proficient or advanced level in reading in 2008-2009, compared 43.5 percent in 2009-2010, 58 percent in 2010-2011, 46.8 percent in 2011-2012 and 50 percent in 2012-2013.

Elk Mound tenth graders scored 33.3 percent as proficient or advanced in math in 2008-2009, 37.5 2009-2010, 30.1 percent in 2010-2011, 45.7 percent in 2011-2012 and 45.9 percent in 2012-2013.

Nationwide

The National Assessment of Education Progress is administered to fourth graders and eighth graders every two years in representative schools nationwide.

In 2011, 47 percent of Wisconsin students in fourth grade scored at a proficient or advanced level in math, compared to 40 percent nationwide.

In reading, 34 percent of fourth grade students in Wisconsin scored at the proficient or advanced level, compared to 32 percent nationwide.

Among eighth graders, 41 percent in Wisconsin scored at the proficient or advanced level in math, compared to 34 percent nationwide.

In reading, 34 percent of Wisconsin eighth graders scored at the proficient or advanced level, compared to 32 percent nationwide.
