Whitney DeMoe shoots her way to state golf tourney
SOMERSET — In just the first year of Colfax having a girls’ golf team, Whitney DeMoe set the standards pretty high for future players as she became the first girl from Colfax to qualify for the WIAA state meet held in Madison Oct. 14-15.
Competing in the sectional meet held at the Bristol Ridge course in Somerset Oct. 8, DeMoe, a senior, shot a 46 on the front nine and a 49 on the back nine for a 95, earning her the third individual spot and her chance to play at the University Ridge course. The two other players to qualify are Haley Siefort of Ladysmith who had the low score of 89 and Meredith Nelson of Osceola. The top two teams also advance which are Hayward and Spooner.
“I’ve been stuck in third place all year,” Whitney said. “It seems pretty ironic I qualified for state by placing third at this meet.”
After playing on the boys’ team for three years, Whitney has worked hard this year and achieved her goal of getting to the sectional meet and beyond, according to her coach Kim Myers.
“I am very proud of Whitney,” she said. “She made some fantastic putts on difficult greens. Once the wind picked up, she kept her wits about her and made adjustments.”
