Colfax runners face tough competition at Old Abe Invite

EAU CLAIRE — Racing against teams from all three divisions from the area, the Colfax girls finished seventh among 16 teams at the Old Abe Invitational held at South Middle School in Eau Claire Oct. 12 while the boys were 11th out of 15 teams.

Dempsey Fogarty cracked the top ten for the girls, placing seventh in the field of 116 competitors at 15:47 on the fast course while Courtney Dressel came in 19th at 16:11. Abbagail Schotter finished 33rd at 16:33, Ally Heidorn was 77th at 17:56, Heidi Lieffort placed 91st at 18:34 and just behind her came Mallie Doucette in 92nd at 18:34. Aubrey Roberts of Division 1 Eau Claire Memorial breezed through the course with a time of 14:27 for top honors.

“I thought we ran pretty well but all of the teams who finished above us are very good,” coach Joe Doucette said.

Hunter Lieffort, returning from an injury this past week, ran a personal best time of 18:05 to take 45th place out of 112 individual runners. Tucker Hovde was close behind for 49th at 18:11 and Zach Arvold solidified the third spot for the Vikings with a 57th place finish at 18:21. Brett Prince followed in 69th at 18:45, Jacob Larson was the fifth runner in 87th place at 19:28 and Isaac Lee was 92nd at 19:36. Darin Lau, whom the Vikings will see at the sectional meet, won the race at 15:47.

“Our 11th place finish is deceiving because we actually ran pretty well but we faced really good competition,” Doucette said.
