Elk Mound boys sixth, girls eleventh at SCC meet

In a field of 138 individuals and 13 teams, Elk Mound’s Kyle Holzwarth placed second to lead his team to a sixth place finish at the St. Croix Central cross country meet held (again) under hot and humid conditions Sept. 5. The girls were led by freshman Elizabeth Fasbender who was tenth among 126 individuals, as the girls were last in the 11 team field.

 Holzwarth finished with a time of 17:55 which was 38 seconds behind the winner Henry Klein of St. Croix Falls. Next in for the Mounder boys were Lucas Winter in 27th place (20:23), Justin Fedie on his heels in 28th (20:27), Caleb Kruger in 41st (21:15, Hayden Kohls, 68th (22:45), Josh Hall, 95th (23:52) and Drew Sternecker, 106 (24:30).

“The boys ran tough and we now have a starting point to build off,” Mounder coach Jeremiah Fredrickson said.

Fasbender dropped a full minute off her time from the previous meet, finishing in 17:58 and fellow freshman Kami King was the second runner in for Elk Mound in 36th (19:26). Sam Jain followed in 77th (21:06) and running with her, Jamie Solem was 79th (21:10) and Nevada LaPoint, 80th (21:11). Danae Sternecker cruised in at 95th (22:20.03) and on her heels was Elayna Gutsch in 96th (22:20.75) with Waive Melgaard, 99th (22:49), Sarah Winchester, 104th (23:12), Corrine Zimmer, 106th (23:15), Kassie Jain, 125th (33:53) and Kathleen Simmons, 126th (35:27). Mckenzie Fortier of Osceola won the race in 18:24.

“Several of the girls improved on their times from the Boyceville meet,” Fredrickson said. “Overall, it was a good meet for both the teams and this was a good point for us to measure ourselves from.”
