Bloomer teen killed in Cooks Valley rollover

TOWN OF COOKS VALLEY —  A 17-year-old from Bloomer died in a one-car rollover east of Colfax on state Highway 40 July 4 in the Town of Cooks Valley.

Shayla Rose Story was traveling south on Highway 40 at around 10:41 a.m. near 155th Avenue in the Town of Cooks Valley when she approached a curve, drifted onto the shoulder, came back onto the highway and rolled over.

Story was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt she was driving, according to a news release from the Wisconsin State Patrol.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department, Bloomer Police Department, Bloomer Fire Department and the Mayo 1 helicopter responded to the scene.

Story was transported by ambulance to the Bloomer Memorial Medical Center and was flown from there by helicopter, headed to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.

Story died while in flight.

The Wisconsin State Patrol is investigating the accident.
