Blood drives to be held in memory of Dennis Geissler in June & August
Two blood drives in memory of former Colfax School Superintendent Dennis Geissler will be held in Colfax on June 20 and August 20.
Geissler spent his entire career dedicated to giving back to his community and the education of area youth. The second oldest of ten children, he learned from his mother the importance of education. In fact, many of his siblings have also pursued careers in education.
Geissler began as a middle school math teacher and vice principal at McFarland Elementary School. After that, he spent 14 years in the Colfax School District as principal of the elementary and middle school and principal of the high school. He retired after serving as superintendent of the Colfax district. Following six months of retirement, he was called upon to serve as the superintendent of the Osseo-Fairchild School District.
“My father was dedicated to all of the communities he served and always saw the good in people. He was more like a friend and mentor rather than an authority figure. He empowered his students to always do their best, and many of them credit my father with encouraging them to continue their education,” said Erin Flug-Geissler, Geissler’s oldest daughter.
“He would be honored that community members and students would remember him through the selfless act of donating blood. Our family is grateful that through his death, he can continue to give back to the community he loved,” she said.
Geissler passed away in November of 2012.
The American Red Cross honored Geissler as an Everyday Hero in March for his contributions to the community and to education.
“Because Dennis was so compassionate about giving back to the community and blood donation, it’s very fitting that the community will have the opportunity to honor this Everyday Hero by donating blood in his memory. This is a great opportunity for others to give the gift of life,” said Geoff Kaufmann, CEO, North Central Blood Services Region.
A blood drive was held in Osseo-Fairchild in March to honor Geissler’s memory.
