Mounders tune up for regionals with three wins

After winning another conference championship, the Elk Mound baseball team received a number one seed in the regional tournament, allowing them to have a bye the first round. Needing to get some games in to stay sharp, they appeared more than ready for tournament play as they took a win over Spring Valley 4-0 on May 20. Then faced some tougher competition as they hosted Altoona a day later earn a 1-0 win. They played a Big Rivers Conference team when they traveled to River Falls and picked up a 5-2 victory on May 23.

Spring Valley

It was a scoreless game until the fourth inning when the Mounders finally pushed a run across. They then tacked on three more in the fifth. Nate Spehle gave up just two hits to the Cardinals while striking out nine and issuing just one free pass for the win. Garret Phillips led the offense going 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI while Hunter Kohls brought in two runners, batting 1 for 3 on the day. Cole Tyman collected two hits and Seth Kruger stole a pair of bases.

The Mounders scored the only run of the game in the first inning when Hunter Dicus drove in Alec Winter on a base hit. Kohls came up with a one out double in the fourth, but was stranded when the next two batters went out. Elk Mound had only four hits in the game and that early run proved to be all they needed, as Phillips was running over the Railroaders, giving up just four hits himself while whiffing eight and walking one.

River Falls

After the Mounders took another early lead with two runs in the first, the Wildcats knotted things up in their half of the inning. But, hurlers Spehle and Hunter Dicus shut them down the rest of the way. Elk Mound came right back in the second with two more runs and tacked on an insurance run in the fourth. Phillips had three of his teams seven hits and had the only extra base hit with a double for the game. Winter was credited with a pair of RBIs in the contest. Spehle earned the win, allowing just one hit in five innings and Dicus finished it off, also giving up just one hit with two strikeouts in two innings.
