Elk Mound sends four to state track meet

BLOOMER — Both the Elk Mound boys’ and girls’ track teams found out just how tough Division 2 competition can be at the sectional level. The girls failed to get anyone to the state meet while the boys will have a 4 X 200 relay team compete along with freshman Jonah Bauer in the 100 m dash. After winning the team regional, the Mounders finished sixth out of 35 teams while the girls were 21st of 30 teams in the meet held May 23 in Bloomer.

Jonah Bauer, Ryan Bridges, Jordan Klemp and Andrew Zabel won the relay at 1:32.89 while Bauer was second in his sprint at 11.03. Just missing a state berth by placing  fifth was the 4 X 800 relay of Nate Mack, Zabel, Mitch Zimmer and Shawn Lane with a time of 8:32.08. Other Mounders earning team points by placing in the top eight spots include:

Dakota Tarnow, sixth in the 300 hurdles (42.70), sixth in the 110 hurdles (15.47) and eighth in the pole vault (11-06), Josiah Bauer, sixth in the shot put (48-01.25), the 4 X 100 relay was seventh with Klemp, Tyler Deutschlander, Yeng Her and Jonah Bauer (45.69), Bridges, eighth in the 200 m dash (24.37) and the 4 X 400 relay was also eighth with Bridges, Zabel, Zimmer and Mack (3:35.92).

Mack was 10th in the high jump (5-08), Ben Holzwarth placed 11th in the 3200 m run (10:38.97), Lane was 13th in the 800 m run (2:12.47) and Zimmer finished 15th in the same race (2:15.63).

After competing at state in the pole vault as a sophomore and a junior, senior Andie Friberg finished seventh in the event for the girls at 9-00, six inches less then her regional height. Also a state competitor last year, Alyssa Buros placed 15th in the shot put with a toss of 29-08.25, over six feet short of her regional winning mark. The 4 X 100 relay team missed a chance to compete at state by finishing fifth with Elly Friberg, Andie Friberg, Waive Melgaard and McKenna McVey (52.60) and the same foursome placed sixth in the 4 X 200 relay (1:51.92). Elly Friberg was  one spot away from a state berth with a fifth in the high jump (5-00) and McVey  earned team points with an eighth place in the 200 m dash (28.29).

The 4 X 800 relay team of Rachel Caron, Emma Hayes, Hannah Flatness and Danae Sternecker was 13th (10:54.11).
