Colfax boys third, girls fifth at conference meet

HAMMOND — The Colfax boys repeated a third place finish from last year at the Dunn-St. Croix Conference meet while the girls’ team also stayed in the same fifth place spot of last season. Elk Mound won the boys’ division while Mondovi took the girls division at the meet  held at the St. Croix Central High School track May 14 with the temperature in the 90s, making things just a little difficult and uncomfortable for athletes, coaches and fans.

Garrett Miller was a double winner for the boys, taking the 400 m dash in 51.99 and anchoring the 4 X 800 relay with Lachlan Hinwood, Matthew Almquist and Michael Larson in a time of 8:31.47. Hinwood added a second in the long and grueling 3200 m run in the hot conditions and the 4 X 200 relay was also a runner up with Jeremiah Wait, Brad Foyt, Trevor Secraw, and Devon Utpadel at 1:41.53, three seconds behind the Elk Mound team.

Hannah Hover streaked to an individual win for the girls in the 200 m dash for a personal best 27.65 and was also the anchor for the winning 4 X 200 relay with Ryleigh Prochnow, Katy Toycen and Katie Christoffel for another personal best at 1:53.44.Heidi Lieffort continues to improve her distance in the discus throw, flinging it 114-00 to break her own record set last week by a foot and bested her pole vault leap by three inches, placing second at 8-08. Dempsey Fogarty also earned a second in the 400 m dash at 1:04.82.

“I could not have been prouder of the effort our kids set forth in this meet,” coach Ryan Krall said. “This has been an unbelievable spring weatherwise and it didn’t change for this one. The hot weather took its toll on the kids as the meet progressed. We asked many kids to compete in 3-4 events under the harshest of conditions and they gave it everything they had. They are all willing to give everything they have for the betterment of the team, whether it is running a relay for the first time or competing in an open event because we think they might score some points. Hannah and Dempsey are running through injuries and Courtney Dressel had a daunting task, running the three longest races of the day (4 X 800 relay, 1600 m and 3200 m run) and she performed great. Brittany Rothbauer had to run the 3200 then run a leg of the 4 X 400 relay in the very next event and she was outstanding. Heidi continues to impress us everytime out and her points were crucial for us. Our whole team performed as well as could be expected and we are excited for the regional and sectional meets this week. After we recover from this meet, we will be strong and ready to qualify a lot of athletes for state at La Crosse,” he added.

The road to state begins with the regional meet at Boyceville May 20 with the sectional meet at the Colfax track Thursday, May 23.
