Brady Simonson, a freshman at Colfax High School who wrestles for the Bloomer-Colfax co-op team, claimed a Heart O’ North Conference championship in the meet held in Ladysmith Feb. 2.
Simonson won all three of his matches at 113 pounds, starting with a pin in .39 seconds over Andy Mason of Spooner, then also pinned Aaron Hanson of Hayward in 3:47. He then took the championship match by a 9-0 major decision over Michael Peggar of Ladysmith, giving the team 25 points as they placed eighth out of the nine team field with 77 points.
Although B-C had two conference champs last year with Levi Nayes and Conner Stone, Simonson is the first Colfax native since Travis Anderson in 1993 to stand at the top of the podium with a title. (Colfax combined with Elk Mound that year and competed in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference. Jesse Halvorson of Elk Mound also won the conference meet.) That was the final year of wrestling for Colfax until they combined with Bloomer last year.
Dan Thorgerson was the runner up at 152 pounds for B-C after winning by a pin, taking a 7-5 decision, then losing a 7-5 decision in the final match for 18 team points, Robby Rands placed fourth at 138 pounds with a 15-6 major decision, a 12-2 loss, a 14-0 win, then was pinned in 4:15 in the third place match for 12 points.
Finishing in fifth place for 10 points was 106 pounder Justin Wachtendonk who lost his first match 9-5, then pinned his next opponent in 2:18, lost 12-0 in his third match then finished his day with a pin at 1:37.
Sixth place was earned by three B-C boys including Tucker Hovde at 120 pounds, who lost two matches and received a bye in between for three team points, Jon Thorgerson at 145 lost his first match by a pin, won his second by pinning his opponent for six points, then was put on his back in his last two matches. Stephen Snyder also took sixth at 220 pounds, losing three times by a pin and picked up three team points with a bye in his second match. Ben Klatt (160 pounds) and Jake Floodquist (170 pounds) both lost their first two matches and did not score any team points.
Up next is the regional meet at St. Croix Central on Saturday, February 9.
