Lady Vikings overcome slow start to blow past Bulldogs

BOYCEVILLE — Although the Colfax girls have played some pretty tough and exciting games against Boyceville the past several years, the Bulldogs seem to have lost a little of their bark this year. The Vikings defeated them by 12 points earlier in the year, and after a close first half this time around, Colfax used a big third quarter to pull away and earn a 43-27 win on Boyceville’s home court Jan. 31. It was the only game of the week for the Vikings who remain undefeated in the conference at 11-0.

The Vikings led 7-6 after the first quarter and thanks to six points from Hannah Hover, four from Ryleigh Prochnow, a deuce by Dannielle Dachel and a free throw each from Taylor Shipman and Braanna Steen, Colfax extended their lead a bit at 21-17 at the intermission.

The defense stepped up like they have all year,  holding the Bulldogs to 10 points the rest of the game, including six in the third stanza while the Vikings picked up 15 in the quarter. Mallie Doucette, who was held scoreless in the first half came up with eight points on a triple, a deuce and three free tosses while Steen added a trey and a shot from close range to go with Prochnow’s bucket allowing Colfax to take control, up 36-23 heading into the final eight minutes. They then outscored their opponents 7-4 the rest of the way to finish off their 16th win of the season.

“It has been a great rivalry over the years with Boyceville,” coach Joe Doucette said. “They are always physical and defend well. I liked the way we never panicked or got too excited after our slow start. Our ability to defend was a big key again when we struggled scoring. Our bench was solid after we fought with foul trouble early on and we had to work for everything.”

Doucette finished with 12 points to lead the Vikings while Prochnow added 10. Boyceville’s leading scorer Abbey Bird, who averages 10 points a game, was held to just five by the stringent Viking defense.
