Colfax girls clip Cardinals wings

Making the most of their only game of the week, the Colfax girls used their pressing defense and some hot shooting to take a 14-2 first quarter lead at home against Spring Valley and eventually won the lop sided contest 58-20 last Friday night.

11 players scored for Colfax while seven different Vikings connected from behind the arc in the win including Braanna Steen twice in the third quarter as she finished with a game high 17 points to lead the team. Hannah Hover, Mallie Doucette, Dannielle Dachel, Taylor Shipman, Brittany Rothbauer and Emily Halpin added the other triples.  The Colfax defense did their part again as they held the Cardinals to single digit scoring in all four quarters.

“Even though we got off to a good start, I thought we were sluggish in the first half,” coach Joe Doucette said. “We played harder and moved the ball better in the second half. Chey Olson and Brittany Rothbauer gave us a spark off the bench and I think our bench and our ability to go 9-10 deep will be a key for us late in the year.”

Andrea Brantner and Jessica Moonen scored their first varsity points for Colfax as Brantner, a freshman dropped in a fourth quarter bucket and Moonen, a junior who missed last season with a torn ACL, hit one of two free throws. Doucette and Dachel both collected four assists in the game while Olson and Steen snared five rebounds each to lead in that department. Doucette and Prochnow combined for 11 steals on the defensive side.

Six more conference games remain on the schedule in the next four weeks for the Vikings with just one at home.
