MADISON — Wisconsin’s 91.1 percent public high school graduation rate continues to be one of the highest graduation rates in the nation, according to a recently released report, “Public School Graduates and Dropouts from the Common Core of Data: School Year 2009–10,” from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).
“For the sixth year in a row, Wisconsin is first or second in the nation in public high school graduation rates, and our rate continues an upward trend from previous years,” said State Superintendent Tony Evers. “Our 91.1 percent public high school graduation rate places us second in the nation, increasing by more than four percentage points over six years. We should be proud of Wisconsin’s hard working public school students, parents, and educators who make us national leaders.”
The report compares graduation rates across states, using the Public High School Averaged Freshman Graduation Rate (AFGR) pulled from the Common Core of Data at the U.S. Department of Education. It shows that the overall U.S. graduation rate rose to 78.2 percent. The report also shows that Wisconsin’s high school drop-out rate is 2.2 percent, which is tied for the 10th lowest in the nation, compared to a national drop-out rate of 3.4 percent.
“It is imperative that we keep our public schools strong. Graduating from high school is an essential step for future success,” said Evers. “We can be proud of our nation-leading ranking, but even one high school dropout is too many. Through our Agenda 2017, our public schools are working hard to do better, especially for our economically disadvantaged students, students of color, and students with disabilities. For our state budget, I proposed a number of innovative programs that make sense to help students who may be struggling and focus our efforts to have every child graduate ready for career and college.”
