10 years ago – January 22, 2003

Roger Kraemer narrowly escaped with his life when fire completely destroyed his mobile home northeast of Colfax Jan. 19.

John A. Jahr, Colfax village clerk/treasurer, has been accepted into First Level Membership of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks, Master Municipal Clerk Academy.

It was quite an eventful 2002 for the Elk Mound police department as they dealt with a domestic dispute that resulted in a stabbing, a major train derailment and the discovery of a homicide victim within the village limits.

25 years ago – January 21, 1988

Greg Berger landed a 47 inch, 23 pound 8 ounce northern pike Jan. 12 in the gravel pit off Highway 170 near Colfax.

Former Colfax resident David Foslid was ordained into the Christian ministry on Oct. 25 at Zoar Lutheran Brethren Church in Superior.

The Elk Mound boys led at halftime 29-24 over Colfax but the Vikings came back to win the game 53-49 as Jim Dobbs scored 24 points to lead Colfax.

35 years ago – January 26, 1978

The Colfax boys escaped with a narrow 56-54 victory over Elk Mound Friday as four players scored in double figures for the Vikings including Mark Lofthus with 14 points, Steve Obermueller with 13, and Bob Fehr and Jay Miller with 10 each.

Shane Bohnen and Jerry Marko both won their weight class at the Colfax Invitational wrestling meet as the team placed fifth out of eight teams.

After a lengthy discussion, the Colfax village board agreed to allot $125 each for eight EMT workers to take a refresher course in Milwaukee.

50 years ago – January 24, 1963

Mr. and Mrs. John Bates are the parents of a son named John Ned born Jan. 11 at the Bloomer Hospital.

Al Froiland, Gary Stene and Bob Christianson all scored 14 points as the Colfax boys won their ninth game of the season 72-53 over New Richmond. They added another win 55-48 over Elk Mound as Christianson again scored 14 points to lead the team.

The children of Mr. and Mrs. Oluf Peterson gathered at the home of their parents here in the village Sunday in observance of the couple’s sixty-fifth wedding anniversary Jan. 21.

65 years ago – January 29, 1948

Richard Jensen has been chosen as one of Wisconsin’s Honor Achievement Members for his outstanding 4-H record book on Dairy kept in the past year.

George Rogstad dumped in 18 points for Colfax but they lost 74-41 to Middle Border leader River Falls. Rogstad again led Colfax with 15 points in a 61-37 win over Prairie Farm.

Colfax fuel oil dealers ask that all Colfax consumers give their utmost cooperation in the conserving of fuel oil due to the shortage. Many Colfax dealers have already drawn considerable amounts on February’s fuel oil quota.

100 years ago – January 31, 1913

T. E. Lunn of Wheeler was over here the latter part of last week to attend the farmers institute. Mr. Lunn is one of the progressive farmers of that locality and takes advantage of opportunities to get new and up-to-date ideas to put into practice.
