Hayes scores 1,000 point in Mounders win

Joining the list of just three other girls in the Elk Mound 1,000 point club, senior Josie Hayes accomplished the feat in a 22 point performance as the Mounders made it seven wins in a row with a 54-43 win at Chippewa Falls McDonell Central Jan. 7.

After holding a 12-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, the teams played to a 22-22 tie at the half as Hayes and Kaysi Meindel combined for 16 of the Mounder’s points. Hayes added 10 points in the third quarter including her second and third triples of the game which put her at 1,001 points and with six more points from Meindel and two each from Emma Hayes and Jamie Solem, the Mounders pulled out to a 40-31 lead heading into the final stanza. Free throws played a big part in the last eight minutes as five different Elk Mound players went to the line for 16 attempts. They knocked down nine of those attempts with Solem leading the way with a 4 for 6 performance allowing the Mounders to seal the win.

“We lost a couple of our players with injuries during the game but our girls showed a lot of mental toughness and resolve,” Elk Mound coach Jordan Kongshaug said.” We made some big plays with our defensive pressure in the second half to earn the win. It was a great accomplishment for Josie to score her 1,000th point during the game. I am proud of what she has done for the team and the program,” he added.

Meindel joined Hayes in double figure scoring with 14 points. As mentioned before, only three other girls in Elk Mound history have scored over 1,000 points including Megan Krumrie in the 2000-04 seasons (1031), Renae Rhude from 1986-90 (1092) and all time leading scorer Colleen Heimstead with a phenomenal 2002 points from 1984-88. With defenses improving the way they are now, it is highly unlikely that record will ever be broken.
