EM girls win two at Onalaska Luther tournament

After soundly defeating Fennimore in the first game 61-41 at the Onalaska Luther tournament Dec. 27, the Elk Mound girls had to come from behind for a 61-56 win over Luther the very next day.

The Mounders shot out the lights from downtown as they came up with nine triples in the game, four each by Sarah Winchester and Kaysi Meindel and one from Mattie Pitts. Winchester’s all came in the first half to go along with three deuces to help her team build a 35-16 halftime lead and Meindel came up with 13 second half points to allow them to coast to the win.

Meindel finished with 20 points, six steals and six assists while Winchester added 18 points in the win. Josie Hayes blocked three shots and collected five rebounds for the Mounders.

The Mounders came up big on both ends of the court as they came back from a 14 point deficit in the fourth quarter to pull out the win over the Knights. Josie Hayes was unstoppable as she collected 18 points in the first half but Elk Mound still found themselves down 32-30 at the break. Things got even worse as they fell behind 46-37 after three quarters of play, and they were down by 14 partway into the fourth quarter. But Winchester drained a couple of triples,  Hayes added 11 more points, Jamie Solem added three points along with two each by Meindel and McKenna McVey while the defense held the Knights to 10 points allowing the Mounders to take the win.

“We showed some real heart rallying from 14 points down in the final quarter,” Elk Mound coach Jordan Kongshaug said. “We hadn’t played very well up until the last five minutes but we hit some big shots down the stretch and turned up our defensive intensity,” he added.

Hayes bounced back from her nine point performance in the Fennimore game to finish with 31 while Winchester added 13 points. Meindel snared seven rebounds while adding nine assists and five steals.
