Elk Mound boys win Luther tournament

ONALASKA — The Elk Mound boys basketball team came up with a season high point total with an 81-38 win over Fennimore in the first game of the Onalaska Luther tournament held Dec. 27-28, then won the championship game with some clutch free throw shooting over Luther 56-54.

The Mounders were hot from behind the arc, knocking down 12 of 18 three pointers including five by Nick Heit for all 15 of his game leading point total. Travis Nelson added three triples of his own and Logan Strom dropped in a pair as the Mounders held a 46-18 halftime lead (also their highest point total for a half this year). Nelson and Ryan Bridges finished in double figure scoring with 11 points each and seven other players all had points next to their name in the scorebook.

“After two weeks off from playing a game, our players came in to the game very focused,” Mounder coach Chris Hahn said. “Everyone that stepped on the floor played well.”

Both teams were undefeated when they started the game but only the Mounders remained that way when the game ended. Elk Mound was behind 28-26 at the break but used a 13-7 third quarter advantage to lead by four points at 39-34 heading into the final eight minutes. Dakota Tarnow and Zac Doll both canned a pair of free tosses late in the game to help the Mounders come from behind to earn a hard fought win.

“The game went back and forth the whole way,” Hahn said. “We did a decent job of limiting their quality looks at the hoop and balance was the key to our win, as our players were very unselfish.”

Heit and Dexter Curry led the team in scoring with 13 points each with Heit collecting three of the teams four triples and Doll added 10 points with seven assists for the game.

Elk Mound is now 10-0 on the season and resumes conference play at Colfax Jan. 10.
