SAND CREEK CHATTER – September 12, 2012

The Sand Creek Arts had a Pampered Chef party on Tuesday evening, August 21, with Lou Ann Gilberts as hostess. Generous orders by our loyal supporters will make it possible to equip the school kitchen with new items. Sandy Plummer was an enthusiastic demonstrator for the evening.

Tom and Caryl Schoen recently returned from a 15 day-trip to Nova Scotia. They traveled a total of 4800 miles. First they stopped at Ottawa, Canada, for a city tour. Next, they went to Quebec City where the highlight was visiting the shrine of St. Anne de Beaupre (the grandmother of Jesus) and a huge church. From there, they went to Brunswick and Hopewell Cape. They traveled along the Chocolate River and to the Bay of Fundy Tidal Park where they have a record of high and low tide, the record high was nearly 4 stories high.

They took a cruise on Shediac Bay and went to Prince Edward Island over a bridge and continued by ferry to Cape Breton Island where Alexander Graham Bell’s mansion and museum is located. They traveled along the Cabot Trail and enjoyed its beautiful scenery. Then they went to Fortress and Louisbourg and had a lunch of what was served to the common people in the 18th Century including soup, bread an pie.

The next stop was Halifax where the highlight was Peggy’s Cove, seeing lots of rocks and the famous Red and White Lighthouse. Following that experience, they took a ferry back to the Mainland towards St. John, the oldest city in Canada and toured Montreal. It took two travel days to arrive back home in the U.S.A.

Dan Nelson, a resident of Morningside Apts., returned to Sand Creek on August 28 after spending 9 days at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.

Mae Sparby and Lillian Wendlandt visited Anna Madison and Elaine Froiland at The Maplewood in Bloomer one day last week.

Tessa Gustum and Abigail Gustum participated in the Minnesota State Fair Fiddler’s contest on the weekend of Aug. 25 and 26 where Tessa placed 4th and Abigail placed 5th.

The Knutson family, including Tim and Dawn Knutson, Owen and Claire and Mary Knutson spent a week at the Oshkosh Air Show at the end of July.

Jenny Cryder and her family enjoyed two weeks with Glenn and Margie Anderson. While Jenny’s family was here with Glenn and Margie, John and Kelsey Anderson, Tyler and Haley of Peoria, IL came to spend a long weekend. Then during that time, Glenn and Margie’s son, Michael and wife, Kim, came from Aurora, CO and also Cory and John Schneider and 3 boys from Colfax, joined the family for a marvelous time.

Alex Vaughn, grandson of Tom and Judy Vaughn, recently returned from a two-week Mission trip to Fagaras, Romania. While there, the group worked on construction and remodeling an orphanage. They ministered in small villages doing vacation Bible School. They attended a Roumanian church where they gave testimonies and sang songs. They did some sightseeing in Brasov. They also made a visit to Dracula’s Castle and the mountains near Bucharest.

Katie Lois, the daughter of Bob and Mary Hanson of Oconomowoc, arrived on Friday evening, August 25, to pick up Adam and Jenna Lois who had spent 10 days at the Hanson farm with Bob and Mary and playing with their cousins.

On Saturday, morning, of August 25, Jim and Jessica Hanson, Nathan, Joshua, Camila, Roci and Angie, came for breakfast at Bob and Mary’s home to celebrate Nathan’s 15th birthday.

Tom and Caryl Schoen attended a family reunion with their children and grandchildren as well as Caryl’s sisters at Big Bend, WI near Milwaukee on the weekend of Aug. 24 to 27. One night of the weekend was with a granddaughter, Becca and her family.

George and Delores Vlcek attended the funeral for Delores’ uncle, Herman Gilbertson, (the last uncle of that generation) held at St. John’s Lutheran church in Spring Valley on Monday, August 27.

Betty Shipley of Barron brought noon dinner to share with her aunt, Verna Knowlton on Tuesday, Aug. 28.

Nancy Erickson and Swanee Rasmussen visited Anna Madison at The Maplewood in Bloomer on Wed. Aug. 29. It was good to see how she had improved in strength since a preceding visit.

Doug and Becky Westholm, Derek, Brandon, Ben and Danielle, together with Julie and Marissa Cyrus, traveled to Wisconsin Dells on Saturday, August 25. The group enjoyed a day at Mt. Olympus Water and Theme Park as well as miniature golf at Pirates Cove before returning home on Sunday.

Ron and Mary Keller of Hopkins, MN, spent Labor Day weekend with Mae Sparby.
