Elk Mound netters drop pair of matches

By Marlys Kruger

MONDOVI – Playing matches against two teams from the Dunn-St. Croix Conference Sept. 6 in the Mondovi Triangular gave Elk Mound coach Donna Weix and her team a chance to see where they stand as they get ready for conference play this week.

It appears they have some work to do, however, as they lost to Plum City in three sets, taking the first one 25-17 but dropping the next two by scores of 25-14 and 15-12. They followed up with a two set loss to Mondovi 26-24 and 25-20.

“We struggled with consistent passing and our net play during both matches,” coach Weix said.

“Sophomore Elly Friberg was able to step in for some key plays when our middle hitter Anna Sessions went out in the second set against Plum City with an ankle injury. But it was hard for us to overcome the injury and our inconsistent play,” she said.

Kaysi Meindel smacked 10 kills to lead the Mounders while Maddy Polden added seven. Becca Kopp was the assist leader with 17 and Katie Johnson set her teammates up eight times.
