BOYCEVILLE -The Boyceville Board of Education was updated on Wednesday, June 19, about the ESSA Plan process by Reading Specialist Holly Sweeney.
Sweeney gave a short presentation to the board and explained despite the complicated process she was working hand in hand with Tiffany Creek Elementary principal Nick Kaiser to get the paper work completed.
“We won’t hear anything back about the funding until September,” Sweeney stated. “But this will help to keep kids on track and make sure they are succeeding.”
The Boyceville School District focuses more on Title 1 which ensures that all children have a fair, equal and significant opportunity for the highest quality of education.
The funding for ESSA is based upon a census, according to Sweeney, and is typically behind by about two years and is based on the poverty rate.
There is some funding that is geared toward Title 3 which is used for limited English speakers and the staff that works with those students.
Staff members can use the Title 3 funding for more training, but it is a limited amount that they receive as Boyceville has only two students that are limited in the English language.
In Nick Kaiser’s report, he explained that summer school will begin in July and will run two days a week for six weeks.
Mr. Kaiser, Mr. Moy and Mrs. Barker were absent during the meeting due to other obligations.
Nick Kaiser and Andy Hoeppner will begin their new positions on July 1 with the Boyceville School District.
Mr. Kaiser is the new superintendent for the school district and Mr. Hoeppner will be taking over as the Tiffany Creek Elementary principal.
The June 19 meeting was also the last for superintendent Kevin Sipple. The board presented him with a gift for a St. Paul Saints game as well as an overnight stay in St. Paul and thanked him for his years of service to the Boyceville School District.
During the meeting the Board of Education:
• Approved the hiring of Gretchen Pederson as the new middle school guidance counselor.
• Approved the adopted budget for the 2018-19 school year.
• Accepted a $420 CVTC career prep mini-grant.
• Accepted a $20,000 Mayo Foundation Hometown Health grant designated for coaching trauma-informed resilience.
