Boyceville Middle School third at State, High School fourth at state; school medal records shattered
MILWAUKEE – Boyceville High School’s Science Olympiad team earned the most individual state championships at this past weekend’s State Tournament at UW-Milwaukee for the first time ever on their way to a fourth place overall finish again this year. Boyceville earned state medals in 15 out of 23 total events, matching the school record set in 2012. Boyceville’s record five state championship gold medals smashed the previous school record.
Boyceville Middle School set a record by earning medals in 15 out of 23 events on their way to a third place finish with a record low team score of 135, breaking the school records of 14 medals and a team score of 154, both set last year.
State Championships were earned by senior Max Engel and junior Rian Corr in both Electric Vehicle and Helicopters, Engel and junior Jason Swanepoel in Hydrogeology, juniors Casey Owen and Nicole Drinkman in Game On, sophomore Mark Timper and freshman Caitlyn Pelikan in WiFi Lab, and seventh graders John Klefstad and Preston Coombs in Towers.
State runner-ups were earned by Pelikan, junior Marissa Dormanen, and freshman Jasmine Windsor in Experimental Design, Owen and Rian Corr in Towers, freshmen Ana Evenson and Noelle Wheeldon in both Disease Detectives and Food Science, freshman Cade Klefstad and eighth grader Connor Sempf in Wind Power, and Cade Klefstad and eighth grader Nathan Corr in Scrambler.
Bronze medals were earned by Swanepoel and Jasmine Windsor in Dynamic Planet, Swanepoel and Drinkman in Rocks & Minerals, Owen and Rian Corr in both Wind Power and Hovercraft, seniors Kiel Anderson and Marvin Wienke in Wind Power, Evenson and Noelle Wheeldon in Dynamic Planet, Noelle Wheeldon and eighth grader Brady Helland in Ecology, Nathan Corr and Sempf in Road Scholar, Cade Klefstad and Helland in Mission Possible, and seventh graders Elijah Farrell and Logan Windsor in Hovercraft.
Fourth place medals were earned by Engel and Swanepoel in Astronomy, Anderson and Wienke in Towers, and Helland and Sempf in Towers.
Fifth place medals were earned by Dormanen and junior Mariah Drury in Invasives, Owen and Rian Corr in Robot Arm, juniors Brennan Wheeldon and Emmett Kapsner in Helicopters, Nathan Corr and eighth grader Grace Edlin in Bottle Rocket, and seventh graders Brittany Buhr and Ali Ruhnke in Towers.
Sixth place medals were earned by Drury and Dormanen in Write It, Do It, Evenson and seventh graders Shiloh Wheeldon and Kayden Benon in Experimental Design, Shiloh Wheeldon and Benson in Food Science, Evenson and Noelle Wheeldon in Microbe Mission, Cade Klefstad and Sempf in Optics, Cade Klefstad and Nathan Corr in Hovercraft, Farrell and Logan Windsor in Optics, and seventh graders Libby Bygd and Ella Holden in Wind Power.
“I am so excited with the results of our students this year at state” said Boyceville Head Coach Andy Hamm. “Our students have worked so hard over the entire year to do as well as they can at state, and every student stepped up. I was particularly impressed with the five individual event state championships in the high school, and it was exciting to see us lead the state in gold medals, especially considering how much larger all of the other top teams are.”
