TERRY WALTER DURLAND
It is with great sadness that the family of Terry Walter Durland, 72, of Downing, WI announce his passing after a long, hard-fought battle with leukemia and lymphoma, on Friday, July 1, 2016.
Terry was born in Orange, NJ on April 30,1944. Following school he served in the U.S. Navy from 1963 to 1967 during which time he was stationed on Guam and submarine rescue ship USS Skylark. In 1970 he moved to Minnesota as an employee of Xerox Corporation. In 1978 he married the love of his life, Kimberly.
His love and pride for his family was boundless, second only to that was his love of fishing. Nothing made him happier than launching his boat to pursue walleyes, crappies and sunnies. His happy place was the cabin on Crystal Lake near Akeley MN where he spent many joyful days surrounded by family. He also held dear his yearly fishing trips with his brothers on Leech Lake.
True to his East Coast heritage, he loved seafood, especially a good clam on the half shell and our yearly seafood extravaganza. He regularly whipped up extraordinary waffles on his circa 1930 waffle iron, made a mean wild chokecherry and plum jam, and could fry up fish to perfection. Each spring would find him searching the woods for morels and deer sheds with his wife, kids and dog. His gardening was fair to middling but nonetheless produced a bounty each year. A man of infinite patience and good humor, he happily climbed tree after tree each bow hunting season relocating his wife’s tree stands to the next “perfect place.” He loved to be in nature, sitting in a tree with his bow enjoying the view, or tackling an oak with a chain saw and splitting maul. He was proud of his Navy knot tying skills and shook his head at the general lack of knot tying skills displayed by most. In recent years he loved socializing with co-workers and patrons as one of the Ridgeland WI “dump guys”.
Terry will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife of 38 years, Kimberly (Katz), daughters Sarah (Todd) Huebert, Leah Durland, beloved twin granddaughters Hazel and Pearl, as well as brothers Garry Durland (partner Barb Sachi), Robert (Debbie) Durland, and Roger (Kathy) Durland; and many other relatives and friends. Terry was predeceased by parents Walter and Sally Durland (Walters) and sister Carol Lang; and his adored and exceptional dog Toby.
A Celebration of Life will be held in memory of Terry on Sunday, July 17 from 1:00-4:00pm at the Yellow Barn, E4545 County Road FF Boyceville, WI 54725. Those who so desire may make memorial donations in memory of Terry in lieu of flowers. Local arrangements by Anderson Funeral Home in Glenwood City, WI.
The family would like to thank Mayo Clinic Eau Claire and Dr. Sandeep Basu for his kindness, expertise and compassion, the many oncology nurses, including Carol and Laura of Red Cedar. The loving RNs and CNAs of 4th floor Med-Surge: Patty, 3 Courtneys, 2 Hannahs, Karli, Kristen, Becca, Joy, Ellie, Bailey, Jane, Erin, to name just a few. Dr. Jim Deming for his gentle support and counsel. And finally, hospice staff that went above and beyond to bring Terry home. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.
