The 87th Colfax Free Fair will be June 22-25. With the exception of World War II, there has been a fair in Colfax since 1914. In its early days, it was called the Community and Civic League Fair and was primarily headquartered in the Colfax Municipal Building basement. The fair was shifted to what is now the Colfax Fairgrounds in the 1920s.
Pat Varpness won the top prize, a restored Minneapolis Moline tractor, during the Chippewa County Rural Heritage Days May 20-21 in Cooks Valley.
Members of the Madison Stars drum and bugle corps practiced their routines at the Colfax football field June 17 before heading to Menomonie to participate in Drums Along the Red Cedar at UW-Stout.

Two new pieces of playground equipment have been installed at the Colfax Fairgrounds. A third piece is being added at Iverson Park.
The Colfax Police Department received information that two men were occupying an apartment on River Street. The apartment had been vacated and no one was supposed to be on the property. The apartment was searched, and two men were found hiding in the shower. A 19-year-old Colfax man and 20-year-old Chippewa man were arrested on outstanding warrants and probation-parole warrants.
Empty fuel tanks formerly used by Larson’s Super Service are being taken off the property they used to occupy along East Railroad Avenue. Colfax Farmers Union purchased the Larson’s Super Service bulk fuel distributorship from Orv Larson in February.

Initial planning for the village’s new lagoon wastewater treatment system is completed.
Village trustee Tom Prince told the village board he still was unable to obtain DNR approval for construction of toilet facilities at the village’s ball field due to the area being classified as in the floodway of the Red Cedar River.
At the June 22 Colfax Village Board meeting, it was reported that vandals had smashed in the office door in the new cattle barn at the Colfax fairgrounds, destroyed the tables and chairs inside and broke out the windows. The Colfax fair was scheduled to start June 24.

Boys from the Colfax Chapter of the FFA will present a program over radio station WEAQ this coming Saturday. The local Colfax Co-op Creamery is sponsoring the boys in this program.
With 29 teams entered in various classes and a good crowd on hand for the event Sunday, the first state-wide horse pulling contest to be staged in Colfax was termed a fine success by those in charge.

A strawberry shortcake supper will be served at the Methodist Church basement Tuesday.
Juul Noer left Tuesday for the United States Naval Base at Newport, Rhode Island. He was due there Wednesday, June 20. He will be stationed on a repair ship.
FOUND — Newborn calf on Hwy. 170, 1 ½ miles east of Wheeler near bridge. Owner requested to call and pick up animal. Henry Wigdahl, phone 3405, Wheeler.

The Messenger has received a letter signed “Mr. Johnson,” and it can’t do a thing with it until it finds out who Mr. Johnson is. There is “too much Johnson” for that.
J.E. Wheeler doesn’t claim to be an expert angler but he feels quite proud of the splendid twelve pound pickerel that he caught while fishing in Lake Colfax last Sunday.
The local base ball team more than evened up for their defeat by Boyceville in the early season when they handed them an awful trimming last Sunday on the Boyceville grounds. The final score was 14 to 3 in favor of Colfax.
