Becky Marine, a special education teacher in the Elk Mound school district, was honored April 1 at a banquet in Eau Claire as one of the recipients of the Kohl Teacher Fellowship.

Crews began dismantling the stack on the top of the former Colfax Farmers Union fertilizer building.

Mary Ellen Ralph and Beverly Keltner notified the Colfax school board of their intention to retire at the end of the school year. Ralph has served as the school nurse for 18 years, and Keltner is retiring after 34 years in education, the last 29 as a member of the Colfax Elementary staff.

Colfax industrial arts students, under the direction of their teacher Mike Gullickson, have been working on the construction of the Colfax Woman’s Club gazebo in the park next to the municipal building.

Dr. Larry L. Phillips, dentist, an associate of Dr. G.J. Neumamn, announced office hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, including the 12 to 1 noon lunch hour.

Honored at the Student Recognition Banquet at UW-Stout April 24 from Colfax were Tara Berge, Brian Buchner, Nicole Earnhart, Brenda Gullickson, Malayna Halvorson, Timothy Irwin, Melissa Klukas, Kristina Peterson, Erica Popple, Sheri Rude and Beth Werner. From Elk Mound were Vicky Christopherson, Jenny Cyr, Thuy Dong, Kevin Gilbertson, Aimee Hahn, Angela Hurlburt, Jody Knutson, Trevor Linberg, Erica Treat, Laura Vesper, Tim Weidinger, and Zach Zielie.

Colfax public school librarians objected to a policy that would allow parents to file a notice with the school, and the book would be taken off the open shelves and placed on restricted shelves. The librarians believed that instead of having the authority to restrict books from all students, parents should only have the authority to restrict books from their own children. The Colfax school board sent the policy back to committee for revision.

Contributions toward an extrication tool for the Colfax Rescue Squad have reached $7,500 toward a goal of $8,800.

Prom queen candidates at Colfax are Holly Brockman, Billie Jo Knaack, Amy Knutson, Becky Knutson and Tami Silva. Prom king candidates are Ken Artnson, Randy Bates, Mike Dressel, Roger Gullickson and Jamie Knutson.

A business transaction has been completed whereby Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Fehr have become the owners of a home on the north side of the village which they purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Donald Paff. The Joseph Alms family currently reside in the home.

No opposition was expressed at a hearing Monday evening on the proposed installation of sidewalks on a portion of East River Street in Colfax. An estimate has been made of 45 cents for sidewalk construction and $1.20 per lineal foot for curb.

Eight students from Colfax High School will be honored at the annual Leadership Recognition Dinner at Stout State University May 4. The students are Linda Jahr, Ruth Ann Gotliebson, Linda Stevens, Jane Greenhill, Janet Greenhill, Tom Harstad, Vicky Johnson, and Kristi Iverson.

April 26, 1951

Myrna Rude of Colfax represented Dunn County in the Minneapolis Tribune spelling bee April 14. She attended with her teacher, Mrs. William Jensen of Colfax.

Francis Seever and Selmer Anderson of Colfax were severely injured last Wednesday morning in an automobile accident which occurred on STH 12 at the main gate of the Badger Ordnance Works at Baraboo. Seever is an employee of the plant.

A total of 1,030 legal sized fingerling brook trout were planted in Eighteen Mile Creek on Tuesday afternoon with the assistance of nine Colfax Rod and Gun Club members.

Colfax High School’s annual Athletic Banquet was held April 17. The event was sponsored by the Colfax Commercial Club.

With the arrival of spring and warm weather such as we have been having the past several days … the opening gun will be fired on May 7th when the Boyceville base ball team will arrive here … of course the fans must not expect a team that will win every game. A good fifty percent team that will play a game without too much argument with the umpire is a dandy.

A.A. Owen and son Rufus opened up the Colfax Bakery this week in the room next door to the barber shop on Main Street.

Friday of this week the Colfax home talent stage performers will appear at Elk Mound and put on their play. Publicity is what this village needs and it is getting the right kind wherever these people have appeared with their play.
