MADISON – After an 0-3 performance in last evening’s state wrestling preliminary round, Boyceville was able to flip that record around in the quarterfinals wrestled earlier today at the Kohl Center in Madison.
The Bulldog’s three remaining state participants – Brock Schlough, Micah Johnson and Garrett Joles – all claimed victories in their respective Division 3 quarterfinals’ matches to advance to this evening’s semifinal round which gets underway at 7 p.m.
In his first-ever state tournament appearance, Boyceville freshman Brock Schlough blanked Mineral Point senior Brandon Forseth 7-0 in a 138-pound quarterfinal match to get the Bulldogs their first win of the 2016 tournament.
Schlough scored in each of the three periods with a takedown in the first, a three-point near fall in the second and finished with a two-point near fall.
Schlough will face a fellow freshman in the semis when he battles Ryan Neu (36-8) of Dodgeville.
Micah Johnson scored his seventh state tournament win after holding off DeSoto’s Lance Buckles for a thrilling 5-4 victory at 170 pounds. Buckles, a senior, was a member of last year’s 170-pound, D3 state bracket.
Johnson took an early 2-0 lead but gave up an escape and takedown to trail 3-2 after the first period. Johnson took the lead for go when he scored a two-point near fall in the middle frame. He added an escape to start the second and then held off Buckles, who scored on an escape and a stalling penalty in the third period.
Facing Johnson in tonight’s semifinal match is Drew Hennessey, who upended Edgar’s Alex Lemanski (a 152-pound state qualifier a year ago) by a score of 5-2 in the other quarterfinal bout in the top half of the bracket. Hennessey, a freshman from Iowa-Grant/Highland, is 31-10.
Garrett Joles was the third Boyceville wrestler to punch his ticket for the semifinals with a 7-3 decision over Shiocton senior Mason Gomm (34-4) at 182 pounds.
It took Joles only 20 seconds to get the early lead on a takedown but Gomm escaped with 22 second left in the first period to pull to within a point.
Joles added a reversal in the next period to a 4-1 lead but Gomm scored his own reversal in the third period. Joles, however, built his lead to his win margin of 7-3 with an escape and takedown.
Joles, who is one of five wrestlers in the D3 182-pound field that has previous state tournament experience, including last year’s state champion Kamren Bornbach of Stratford, will wrestle New Lisbon’s Kyle Woodford in the semis. The senior is a solid 42-4.
