Darlene Heuhn and her sister Deanna Heuhn bought the Glenwood City Curves from Mary and David Petersen and officially took over the business on April 1st.

Amid a crowd of family and old friends, Glenwood City resident Mary Rose Moore celebrated her 104th birthday at Glenhaven Nursing Home on April 21.

Krista Klatt and Jordan Stansbury were named prom king and queen at Glenwood City’s prom this past Saturday. The king and queen of Boyceville’s prom, also held this past Saturday, were Michael Horvatin and Reina Ferguson.

Laura Mallet, a senior at Glenwood High School, won a 1997 Ford contour as part of the Glenwood City post prom party.

Bud and June Peterson announced last week the sale of Bud’s Food Market to Dean Ormson of Spring Valley. The Petersons have been in the grocery business in Glenwood City for the past 37 years. Ormson took over the operation of the store on Monday, April 3rd.

After 31 years in the electrical business, Selvin and Betty have transferred the ownership of Lee’s Electric to their son Steven as of last Saturday, April 1.

Local heating dealer J.R. Service was recently honored by Lennox Industries for a 25 percent increase in purchases of Lennox products during 1988.

The Glenwood City Common Council Monday night approved bids for construction on Syme Avenue.

The Connorsville and Wheeler elementary Schools will close after the 1989-90 school year. The Boyceville School Board finalized that action by unanimously voting to close the schools at last Tuesday’s meeting.

Arlene Carlson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Carlson, and Douglas Hill, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Hill, are representing Glenwood City at Badger Girls State and Badger Boys State.

A huge wind storm Saturday caused fallen trees and limbs, and several TV aerials were blown down, as well as several barns in the New Richmond area. In the Twin Cities the wind was clocked at 106 miles per hour.

Lyda Ainsworth’s  “The Spirit Eternal” a choral reading for young people, placed third in the AAUM national creative writing contest this spring. Lyda is a graduate of Glenwood City high school in the class of 1927.

Glenwood City postal patrons who come to me with the requests, complaints and other postal service problems, can expect more prompt replies and better service than they have experienced in the past. With the Opening of the Oshkosh District office, all postal operations and service mail leaving the office here will now be sent to Oshkosh rather than Washington.

This is one of the richest pea producing regions of the country. Peas constitute the most valuable element of Wisconsin canned fruit and vegetable industry, with some 12,000,000 cased produced in the state yearly.

Sixty-eight eighth graders from the local and surrounding schools attended the annual Rural Visitors’ program at the Glenwood City high school on Monday May 10. Preliminary registrations indicate that there will be approximately 70 in the Freshman class next fall.

If you can put off writing your letter till July 1st, you will be able to save the princely sum of one cent on each missive, for on that dark, dry, and doleful day (to the wets) the old postage rates will be restored. Letters will again go for 2c and postals for 1c.

Elmer Gavic, a well known Glenwood City young man, has been in Paris the last six months. During which time he has helped install telephones for many of the elite Americans in the French capital, including President Wilson, General Pershing and others.

Glenwood City will have no Chautauqua this summer, but it will have something distinctly better so far as quality of entertainment is concerned: a summer lyceum musical course consisting of five numbers of a class decidedly above that afforded by the generality of Chautauqua.

Boyceville will request the Dunn County Board of Supervisors to designate Boyceville Municipal Airport as the Menomonie area airport for the county, it was decided by the village board May 7. The board also voted to construct an addition to the fire hall despite some  citizen protest and decided to look further into building additional office space in the village hall.

Wisconsin residents will be able to observe a solar eclipse May 30. The eclipse will be annular, meaning that although the moon will cross over the sun an outring of the sun’s atmosphere will be visible at all times. The safest way to watch this event will be by indirect viewing or on television.
