In a surprise announcement made just prior to the legion’s monthly meeting Monday, May 3, Carey was informed by St. Croix County American Legion Commander John Helgeson that she had been selected for the honor. WILSON — A local legion member and officer has been awarded a prestigious honor.
In a surprise ceremony held Monday evening, May 3rd, Carey Casey, who is a member and financial officer of the Matson-Miller American Legion Post 220 in Wilson, was honored as the District 10 Legionaire of the Year for 2020.
John Helgeson, Commander of the St. Croix County American Legion, made the brief presentation to a surprised and somewhat shocked Casey prior to the Wilson Legion’s monthly meeting.
District 10 encompasses a nine-county region that includes Barron, Buffalo, Chippewa, Dunn, Eau Claire, Pepin, Pierce, St. Croix, and Trempealeau counties.
Casey had been nominate for the award by her post commander Troy Nelson.
Below is the letter that Nelson sent to Larry Larson, vice commander and commander-elect of the 10th American Legion District of Wisconsin.
“Vice Commander Larry Larson,
I would like to nominate Carey Casey of Post 330.
Carey is currently serving as Finance officer. She stepped up into this role without hesitation when the vacancy needed to be filled.
With over 20 years as an American Legion member, she continues to impress upon her peers and to myself the amount of dedication she brings to the Post. She also serves as the bar manager and supervises six part-time bartenders including members that have a license to work behind the bar. She oversees orders of product and handles all aspects of the business side of the Post.
She is the primary responsible leader for most of the Post’s fund raiser events such as the Turkey Raffle, Bingo, Meat Raffles, and Spring fishing tournaments. Carey spends much of her time on the Saturday meat raffles when she is not acting as a first responder in the Glenwood City Fire Department.
It is the dedication to the veterans, the Wilson and Glenwood City communities, and our local Post that I truly believe she has what it takes to be recognized as Legionaire of the Year.
