Lloyd was born January 19, 1923 to William and Mary (Draxler) Berends. He grew up as part of a hardworking farming family and moved to various farms within St. Croix County during his childhood. Lloyd was a good student and a talented athlete who enjoyed playing baseball and basketball, graduating from New Richmond High School in 1941. He spent the first half of his adult life farming in Glenwood City. Soon after graduating, Lloyd married Mary Charlotte Lundy who died following the birth of his first child, William. Lloyd later married Margaret Jane Hawkins and had 8 children — David, Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Kathleen, Ann, Peter, and Robert. Changing careers, Lloyd sold the family farm in Glenwood City and relocated to Rice Lake in order to earn his machinist certification. In 1967, the family moved to New Richmond where Lloyd worked at Doboy Packaging for 21 years. Jane passed away in 1972. Lloyd met Norma Jean Wood Rasmussen and they married in 1974. The pair moved to Cedar Falls in 1986 and upon retirement, they spent their winters in Mesa, AZ. Norma passed away in 2012 after 38 happy years together. Lloyd enjoyed time spent visiting with family and friends. He was always a jokester and loved to give everyone a hard time. His favorite pastime was watching a good horse pull.
