ROGER LAVERNE JONES

Roger Laverne Jones, age 90, passed away February, 11, 2018 at Northland Mayo Clinic in Barron, WI.

He was born January 3, 1928 in the township of Drammen, Eau Claire County, WI. to Phillip Sheridan and Gena Matilda (Easterson) Jones. On June 24, 1950 he married Evelyn Podd and they resided in Milwaukee, WI. Gary was born November, 9, 1951 in Milwaukee and Beverly, November 21, 1953 in Waukesha, WI. In 1954 Roger and Evelyn moved to a dairy farm near Colfax, WI. Sharon was born August, 31, 1960. They farmed there for several years before selling the farm due to Roger’s health. In 1963 they moved to a hobby farm near Albertville, WI. Roger worked for Peters Meats as a truck mechanic in Eau Claire, while residing there. Gary developed the love for farming by working on neighboring farms and in 1968 another farm was purchased near Colfax. Roger, Evelyn and the children farmed there until 1990. They again purchased a hobby farm closer to Colfax and retired. In 2010 Gary bought a house by Prairie Farm, WI. and Roger lived there until his passing.

Roger loved his dogs and always had one by his side. They were like a member of the family. Roger liked to bobber fish for “northerns”, mostly by dams, rivers or sloughs. He took his boat to the lakes too hoping to latch on to that “Big Musky”. Deer hunting was the most memorable when Evelyn’s family would come up from Milwaukee and stay for the week. He also went out to Wyoming mule deer and antelope hunting and to Canada fishing. He was a country person and would put in gardens every year and liked living on the farm. He was an excellent mechanic and could fix cars, trucks and farm machinery which came in handy on the farm. Roger also sold Rochester Silos and from his sales won a trip to Europe. Evelyn and Roger went with other couples/farmers from the Rochester Silo Co. They always said how much they enjoyed that trip. When he was an AMPI delegate they went to San Antonio, TX, and also Roger was Dunn County President with National Farmers Organization for several years.

In his retirement years he would go with Gary to casinos and enjoyed the buffets there. Gary would also take him to “Blue Grass Festivals” with Bill Monroe being his favorite. He enjoyed getting together for holidays, birthdays, etc. with the family. Roger loved reminiscing about the “good old days” and would tell stories for hours. He also enjoyed Packer and Brewer games and when his eyesight failed he would listen to them on the radio.

Roger is survived by his children Gary Jones, Beverly (Merle) Crane and Sharon Jones, granddaughter Renee Crane (James Armstrong) and grandson Mitchell Crane, great-granddaughter Katelyn Armstrong, great-grandson Ethan Armstrong and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by: his wife Evelyn, father and mother, sister Eileen Melgaard, brother-in-law Rueben Melgaard, brother Warden Jones and grandson Matthew Crane.
