Martha E. Cordes, a longtime resident of the Comstock-Cumberland, Wis., area, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018, at Our House Memory Care Unit, Rice Lake, at the age of 92.

Born March 3, 1925, to Katherine and Ernest Indermuehle of Boyceville, Martha was the youngest of three children. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Boyceville, and attended Granger Grade School and Boyceville High School.

After graduating from high school in 1944 as valedictorian of her class, she worked as a cashier at the Dunn County REA office in Menomonie for several years.

Following her marriage to Victor Cordes of Comstock on Oct. 9, 1948, she moved to the Comstock area, where she and her husband owned and operated a family farm in Crystal Lake Township for 40 years.

Martha was a hard-working farm wife, devoted mother and grandmother, and an active member of her community and church. Many people in Barron County knew her as the “card lady” because she also enjoyed selling greeting cards.

Following their retirement from the farm, she and her husband lived at Cumberland for 17 years.

She was a longtime member and board member of the Cumberland Food Co-op and enjoyed working there part-time after she and her husband retired.

When Martha was well over 70, she began playing the piano again. This became a great source of enjoyment to her and many others.

During her last years, she lived near her son John on the family farm at Comstock and with her daughter Paula in California before moving to Our House Memory Care Unit in December of 2015.

Surviving are children Kathy Krell of Duderstadt, Germany, Gene (Beverly) of Fremont, N.H., Paula Cordes of Felton, Calif., and John (Lisa) of Comstock; grandchildren Amber (Bernie) Jobe, Griffin Cordes, Brittany (Justin Jobe) Cordes and Dallas Cordes; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband, a son-in-law Manfred Krell, an older brother Ernie Indermuehle of Menomonie, and an older sister Katherine Cordes of Madison.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, from St. Paul Lutheran Church, Cumberland, with Pastor John Miels officiating and burial at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Comstock. Pallbearers were Amber Cordes, Brittany Cordes, Dallas Cordes, Griffin Cordes, Bernie Jobe and Justin Jobe.

Visitation was held 4-7 p.m. Friday from Skinner Funeral Home, Cumberland, and an hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Lakeview Medical Center Hospice or St. Paul Lutheran Church.
