All School Reunion!

What a great weekend it was with all those people that came to attended the all school reunion. I got reacquainted with some of those graduates from Glenwood City High School that I had not seen in many years, a couple of them several decades had passed. I have trouble putting faces to names and I appreciated the nametags that everyone wore at the reunion.

[emember_protected] A special pat on the back to all those who worked to put the reunion together, especially to those on the All School Reunion, Doug and Arlene Carlson Hill (Class of 1965); Carol Palewicz Kamm Teigen (Class of 1969): Bonnie Blowers Cronk, Business & Computer Ed teacher (1966 to 2009); Nancy Draxler Graese (Class of 1969); Julie Johnson Lee (Class of 1978); Nicole Celt Brite (Class of 1999); Kelsie Hoitomt (Class of 2008); and Jacob Maes (Class of 2011).

I had a long visit Friday noon from two Alumnus of Glenwood City High School who were both here to take in the weekend activities of the annual Rustic Lore Days and the All School Reunion.

David Weingarten (Class of 1947) and his sister, Ruth Weingarten Strum (Class of 1958) were the two that stopped by our office to talk about their years of growing up and attending school in Glenwood City. The Weingarten home was on the west side of town on First Street.

Ruth related that she did not have a 1958 Annual. I quickly said that I had one and fetched it for her to review. She quickly found the pages with the members of her class and when she found her picture and the saying that was printed under all her classmates to attempt to describe that person, a smile came to her face as she read her epithet: “And her tongue tripped merrily along.” She looked over the pictures of her classmates in the annual and I tried to give her any information that I had about those members of the class of 1958.

Her brother Dave worked in the Newspaper office in Glenwood City during and after his school years in the late 1940s and related a story about working at the Tribune.

He noted that one day he broke a finger having it pinched between a block of lead and tabletop. Lead is a very heavy element, and back in those years, lead was main ingredient used to create type and forms that were used in the printing process. Lead type was used from Gutenberg’s invention of moveable type back in 1440 until the 1970s.

Well anyway, Dave broke his finger and went to a local doctor to get that break attended to. After the doctor repaired the finger, he ordered Dave to come back in a couple of days to get a shot of penicillin.

A young nurse was on hand at the clinic to give Dave the shot, and as Dave told it: “You know where they give you the shot penicillin.” He continued: “She must have liked what she saw, because she married me!”

Ruth gave me a printed short story and it is good to add a little humor to our daily life and this one is credited to Vicki LaPinska.

“I went to the store the other day. I was only in there for about five minutes. When I came out there was a city cop writing out a parking ticket. I went up to him and said, ‘Come on buddy, how about giving a senior a break?’ He ignored me, and continued writing the ticket. I called him a name. He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having worn tires.

So I called him a worse name. He finished the second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first.

Then he started writing a third ticket. This went on for about 20 minutes. The more I abused him. The more tickets he wrote.

I didn’t care. My car was parked around the corner and this one had a ‘Hillary in 08’ bumper sticker on it.”

I don’t want to conclude without saying some thing about Florida and Hurricane Irma that is leading a path of destruction in that state. Our prayers go our to all those who are suffering in the wake of this natural weather event.

Paula’s brother (Allen and Paulette Klatt) live at Titusville, Florida and their daughter Jenny and her husband Dan live at Winter Haven. It looks like the brunt missed them. Paula called her brother last week as he was putting up hurricane shutters on their home and Paulette was flying out to South Caroline to stay with her sister Barb and Allen was driving out to meet a friend and out of harm’s way. Jenny and Dan stayed in Winter Haven and so far everything is ok.
