Wheeler man dies in truck-train accident on Highway S

WHEELER  —  Andrew R. Lee, 27 of Wheeler, died in a pickup truck versus train crash at the railroad crossing on county Highway S early Monday morning.

According to a news release from the Dunn County Sheriff’s Department, the Dunn County E-911 Communication Center received a report of the truck-train accident at around 3:19 a.m. Monday, February 13.

The crash occurred near the intersection with Highway S and state Highway 170.

When Dunn County deputies arrived, they found a 2000 Chevy pickup truck had been struck by a westbound train and had sustained extensive damage.

Lee, from Wheeler, was the only occupant in the vehicle.

In addition to Dunn County deputies, the Colfax Community Fire Department, the Colfax Rescue Squad, Dunn County first responders, and a Mayo-One helicopter were dispatched to the scene.

Deputies and medical personnel tried life-saving measures but were unsuccessful, and Lee was pronounced dead at the scene by the Dunn County medical examiner.

According to the news release, it appeared that the pickup truck was stopped facing north on Highway S on the railroad tracks at the time it was struck by the train.

The crash remains under investigation by the Dunn County Sheriff’s Department and by Canadian National Railroad Police.
