New recycling opportunities available for Dunn County
The Dunn County Solid Waste & Recycling Division is excited to roll out two new recycling programs!
We are now accepting all types of Alkaline Batteries for recycling. This means that all alkaline batteries can be taken to any Dunn County Area Collection Station, or the Dunn County Transfer Station and Recycling Center, and recycled for a very small fee. Alkaline batteries no longer contain poisonous metals such as mercury, but that doesn’t mean they don’t cause problems when put into landfills, or when processed for disposal through material recovery facilities. Dunn County is now one of a growing number of counties in Wisconsin (and in the nation) that has taken the initiative to responsibly recycle your unwanted alkaline batteries. They will be shipped to a certified battery recycling company and shredded to recover the steel, zinc, and manganese metals that these batteries are made from. These recovered metals are then used in the production of new products, saving tremendous amounts of energy and conserving our natural resources for present and future generations. Dunn County will charge $0.05 for each N, Coin Cell, AAA, AA, and C size batteries, $0.10 for each D and 9-Volt size batteries, and $0.50 for each Lantern battery. All rechargeable batteries and automotive lead-acid batteries will continue to be taken at no charge.
We are also offering recycling services for Compressed Gas Cylinders, from small propane camp stove cylinders to large propane grill cylinders and tanks. There will be a fee for each type of cylinder or tank that you wish to have recycled, with a range of $1.00 to $20.00 dependent on size. Compressed gas cylinders and tanks cannot be placed into the scrap metal dumpsters at our facilities, due to safety and regulatory concerns at scrap metal yards. Putting a hole in the cylinders or tanks is not necessary, is not recommended, and will not affect the cost of recycling these items.
