After a series of recent copper thefts, Dennis Smith, Dunn County sheriff, is asking for the public’s assistance in reporting suspicious activities. Scrap copper prices have risen in recent months from $1 per pound to more than $3.47 a pound.

An incubator in which his younger sister spent the first several weeks of her life after being born prematurely in the late 1930s has been given to Orv Larson by the family of the late Dr. O.M. and Adina Felland. The incubator was probably built locally to Dr. Felland’s specifications. Janet Larson weighed only a little more than two pounds, and her sister died the same day they were born. Their parents were Reuben and Hazel Larson.

Congratulations to Coach Jason Eckert and the 2006 Colfax Viking football team who are sharing the title of Dunn-St. Croix Conference champions with St. Croix Central.

Elmer Hill was recognized for 22 years of service to the Colfax Kiwanis October 15. He has had to curtail his activities due to poor health.

At the annual meeting of the Colfax Community Fire Department October 15, it was reported that the 1949 pumper or the 1973 pumper may need to be replaced soon. “I don’t know how many more years the state will pass that ‘49 as a back-up pumper,” said Ray Johnson, fire chief.

Six Colfax students attended Badger Girls’ State and Badger Boys’ State this summer: Michelle Stearns, Jeannett Meier, Tina Satter, Chad Arntson, Darren Hoyland and Dave Irwin.

Colfax High School student Jon Ralph attended Science World at Pigeon Lake this summer. The event included nature and science studies as well as fishing, sports and other activities and was sponsored by the State of Wisconsin.

Long-range predictions are that winter will stay at bay long enough for youngsters to have an enjoyable Halloween.

Elk Mound’s FFA Alumni was organized in August with 68 members. Allen Maves presides over the newly-chartered group.

“This team surprised a lot of people with their 5-4 record,” Ken Mueller, coach, said after the Colfax Vikings spoiled Boyceville’s October 23 Homecoming with a 12-6 overtime win.

Donna Rice reigned as homecoming queen at Stout State University last weekend. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D.P. Rice of Colfax.

Senator Gaylord Nelson will be in Menomonie for an evening testimonial dinner honoring Al Baldus, candidate for State Assembly and John Durand, candidate for State Senator, at 7 p.m. Monday, October 31, at the Dunn County Fish and Game club house. Senator Nelson will appear at the Student Center at Stout State University at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 1. The public is invited to attend.

Colfax High School’s homecoming Friday night will feature the Middle Border clash with Hudson High.

Homecoming royalty are Marilyn Stene, freshman attendant; Margie Hainstock, sophomore attendant; Faylene Keilholz, homecoming queen (senior); Jean Holte (senior attendant); Ruth Hainstock, junior class attendant.

Colfax butter has few (if any) equals in the entire state of Wisconsin. As conclusive proof of this claim, Colfax Cooperative Creamery Company’s buttermaker, Marvin Hurley, won second prize in state competition at Chippewa Falls on Wednesday evening with his 96.5 score butter, being topped only by Lloyd Kolden of Augusta, who won first prize with 97 score butter.

The total receipts of the United Lutheran Ladies’ Aid Fair on Wednesday amounted to $160, which was very good considering the unfavorable weather.
