JEFFREY THOMAS GARSKE

Dr. Jeffrey Thomas Garske, 66, of Hilton Head Island, SC lost his life in a tragic cycling accident on the Island the evening of August 18th, 2016.

Jeff, as he was known to friends and family, was born in Glenwood City, WI on April 7th, 1950 to parents Roscoe and Gwen (Williams) Garske. He graduated from the Medical School at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1976 and completed his residency at Akron General in Akron, OH where he met his future wife, Donna Switzer, who he would marry June 19th, 1981.He had a long, successful career in Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine in both Minnesota and South Carolina. He was passionate about his medical career dedicated to the service of others. Athletics and the community surrounding them were also a defining element of his personal life. His name remains on the list of all-time area leaders for scoring in a game in high school basketball in north west Wisconsin. He also played basketball for Western Michigan University. Together with his wife and many friends, he enjoyed training for and competing in some of the nation’s most well-known marathons and duathlons, and in more recent years was a member of Low Country bicycling teams Team Bike Doctor, Robson Forensic, and Team Mack. He looked forward to playing golf each week with his friends at Long Cove Club on the island and thoroughly enjoyed the game. He loved mentoring young or beginner athletes in the sports he enjoyed, and especially loved cheering on his own son and daughter. He rarely missed one of their competitions. And of course, being from Wisconsin, he never quit bleeding green and gold as a lifetime fan of the Green Bay Packers. He could often be found on game day at Jump and Phil’s cheering on his team with other cheeseheads. He is survived by his wife, Donna Garske, his son, Zach Garske, daughter Kallie (and husband Yasmany) Abreu-González, grandsons Christopher and Levi Abreu-González, brother John (and wife Jan) Garske, niece Elisa (and husband Brendan) Macaulay, and nephew Trevor Garske. Please join us in celebration and remembrance of his life. Funeral services will be held at Long Cove Club on Thursday, August 25th at 5pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to “Hilton Head Cycling Club / Jeff Garske Memorial Fund” on line or c/o P.O.
