Margaret M. Palmer, age 99, of Boyceville, WI died Sunday, July 10, 2016 at the Neighbors of Dunn County in Menomonie, WI after a short illness.
Margaret was born May 6, 1917 in the Township of Stanton, Dunn County, WI to Carl and Lillian (Lester) Brehm. She attended the Granger School until her family moved to Boyceville, where she graduated in 1935. She was confirmed in the United Methodist Church in 1931 and remained a life-long member. It was at church that she met Wayne Palmer. They married October 1, 1938. Together they farmed for many years raising both crops and dairy cattle. She greatly enjoyed her flower gardens and songbirds on the farm, and later, at her apartment.
Margaret was very active in her church throughout her life, teaching Sunday and Bible School, participating in Young People’s Group and committees, acting as treasurer, helping in the kitchen, and quilting. She was also a member of the Farm Bureau of Dunn County, finishing out Wayne’s term as director after his death. She served her community by donating many gallons of blood over the years, and as an election worker.
After Wayne’s death, Margaret left the farm and moved to an apartment in Boyceville, where she was lucky to have her sister Virginia as an across-the-hall neighbor and met many other friends. She stayed active as she got older as a member of the Young at Heart Club and volunteer in the kitchen at the Community Center. She was an avid reader, and spent most afternoons in a good book or her Bible. On her 99th birthday she was asked how she lived to be 99 she said, “I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, and I don’t swear. And I laugh a lot!” And laugh a lot she did.
Margaret is preceded in death by her parents; husband Wayne; son Bruce and daughter-in-law Karen; sister Phyllis Grambow and brother Edward Brehm.
Margaret is survived by her son Gene (Jeri) of Grand Junction, CO; grandchildren Daniel of Grand Junction, CO., Lisa (Kevin) Hall of Grand Junction, CO., Michael of Denver, CO., Karl (Jennifer) of Menomonie, WI , and Sean (Tamika) of Silver Spring, MD; great grandchildren Madeline and Sara Palmer; sisters Betty Pittman and Virginia Bygd; sister-in-law Florence Palmer. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
