BOYCEVILLE — The Boyceville School Board announced Madison Bygd as the Boyceville High School Class of 2016 valedictorian and Peyton Hellmann as the Boyceville High School Class of 2016 salutatorian during the Monday, May 16 meeting. Bygd finished with a 4.082 GPA while Hellmann finished with a 4.036 GPA.
The school board recognized May as Mental Health Awareness Month. Bonnie Barker, Director of Special Education/School Psychologist said that the school is helping address the many needs of its students through the Boyceville Community School District counseling and school psychology programs.
Next year there are plans under discussion to explore options to bring in mental health services to the school setting through outside counseling services. In addition, a mental health screener will be made available to help identify students who may be in need.
Barker also announced the Summer Reading Give-away event, which will be held on Tuesday, May 31 at 5:00 in the middle school cafeteria. Elementary and middle school families are invited. Dinner will be served from 5:00 to 5:30 P.M. and from 5:30 to 6:30 P.M the Boyceville Public Library will share their summer reading program. In addition, there will be free books to give-away, drawings for raffle prizes and, weather permitting, colored chalk will be provided to the students to decorate the sidewalk outside.
This event was possible by the Soaring Grant, which promotes literacy, especially for special education students at the middle school level.
In Middle and High School Principal Steve Glocke’s report, the school is in the process of completing the ACT Aspire and Forward testing for grades 7 through 10 and testing has gone well. Glocke recognized Tom Kuenzie for the effort he has put in to make all of the computer based tests function properly and smoothly.
Glocke also recognized Mia van der Paardt, Ben Simmerman and Diane Vig for putting together the Fine Arts Night and Concert. He said the music and art departments never fail to demonstrate the creative and musical abilities of its high school students.
Glocke congratulated Laura Debee and the FCCLA members who competed at state. Samantha Merkel and Marki Lagerstrom received silver medals for their projects on Interpersonal Communication. Abby Lorenz, Afton Fischer, Brooklyn Hellmann, Tori Kostman and Morgan Kuhn were also recognized for earning gold medals for their projects in Illustrated Talk.
All of the spring sports teams will begin WIAA tournament play within the next week. Boyceville will host the Regional Track Meet on Monday, May 23, softball will begin regional play on Tuesday, May 24 and baseball will begin regional play on Thursday, May 26. Opponents and sites are still to be determined.
Glocke also recognized Connie Swanson and many of the junior class parents for providing a wonderful prom for the students of Boyceville and their guests.
Superintendent Kevin Sipple gave an update on the installation of a propane fueling station for the new propane fueled bus. The project recently passed first inspection and is expected to be fully operational in early June. Staff training and final inspection will determine the finalization of the project.
The school board approved the hiring of Lisa Snyder as a Food Service Worker.
The school board approved DAPES(District Administrator Performance Evaluation System) as the evaluation instrument for the District Administrator.
The school board approved the recommendation to hire Katelyn Johnson as the new Spanish teacher.
The school board approved new and updated board policies which were presented for discussion during board meetings on Thursday, April 7 and Monday, May 16.
The school board approved the motion to award diplomas to the members of the Class of 2016 who have met the district’s graduation requirements.
The school board approved the high school membership renewal to WIAA for the 2016-2017 school year.
The school board accepted $2,500 from the Ann Marie Foundation to purchase iPads for a first grade classroom.
The school board also accepted the donation of two guitars valued at $700 from Tom Kuenzie to the Boyceville Music Department.
The Baccalaureate and Senior Awards Program will be held on Wednesday, May 25 at 7:00 P.M.
The high school graduation ceremony will be held on Friday, May 27 at 7:00 P.M.
