Robert Haake, Colfax sophomore, was elevated to Eagle Scout rank in a special ceremony March 25. He is the son of Dave and Sue Haake, rural Colfax.

Four finalists in the search for a new Colfax High School principal have been announced: Gregory Corning Jr., assistant principal at Menomonie; John Dachel, assistant principal at Prairie Farm; Dale Green, assistant principal at Nekoosa; and Paul Nettesheim, principal at Neenah.

Colfax FFA Chapter officers were congratulated by their advisor, Tom Millar, after they conducted the awards banquet March 30. The officers were Nate Erickson; Sophia Secraw; Tryston Beyrer; Brianne Foiles; Cara Shane; Seth Hilson; Josh Secraw; and Dan Wahl.

Lee Bjurquist, superintendent of schools at Colfax, was one of two finalists for the superintendent’s position at Butte, Montana, a community of 35,000 people.

Sealcoating work has been recommended for East Railroad Avenue by the street committee. The street was repaved during the summer of 1990 but is already starting to show signs of wear and tear.

Colfax placed second in Division 2 of the regional Odyssey of the Mind problem-solving competition at UW-Superior. Team members included Shawn Keltner, Scott Keltner, Becky Eder, Megan Bergeson, Sara Henderson, and Laura Bergeson. They were coached by Mary Eder. All of the students are in seventh grade, except Scott Keltner, who is in fifth grade.

Colfax OK Hardware, owned by Fred and Diane Goers, will hold a grand opening April 9 through April 11. Grand prize will be The Happy Snacker Table. Free coffee and donuts and balloons for the kids.

When Robert Rogers became Town of Wilson clerk 40 years ago, he was handed a cardboard box containing its files by his predecessor, Sylvester Trinko. Those files, along with the town’s budget, have grown to fill two filing cabinets.

The Colfax Rescue Squad is approaching its fund-raising goal and now has $7,559.10 to put toward an extrication tool to remove victims from smashed vehicles. The Otto Bremer Corporation recently made a grant of $2,000. Recent contributors included John Busse ($25); Popple Creek Homemakers ($25); Juul and Penny Noer ($200); Joe Satter ($25); Earl Larson ($15); Colfax Viking Bowl donation jar ($100); coin containers at area businesses ($10.80).

April 7, 1966

In the election held Tuesday, 179 voted in favor of the referendum to permit persons to traffic in intoxicating liquors in the Village of Colfax and 89 were opposed.

A total of 67 pints of blood were donated in Colfax on Monday. One Gallon Pins were received by Norman Gilberts; Alden Berg; Mrs. William Mathews; Marshall Hanson.

Easter specials at Gunderson’s Grocery included a 12-ounce box of Gold Cross potato chips for 39 cents; five 16-ounce cans of pineapple for $1; three boxes of Pillsbury cake mix for 83 cents; a two-pound can of Butternut coffee for $1.49.

The Colfax Rod and Gun Club has decided to hold another big fish contest. Colfax merchants and professional men will donate the prizes. In other years, prizes totaled more than $150.

Private Rolland Mittelstadt is undergoing on-the-job training as a reclamation assistant at George Air Force Base in California.

The Colfax Future Homemakers of America sponsored an all-girls prom in the high school gymnasium March 30. The gym was decorated to the theme of “Harbor Lights” with life preservers suspended from the balconies.

The Red Cross drive conducted in March netted $404.25 in the Village of Colfax. Our quota was $625. For the past three years, we have not met the quota. Over the past year, however, donations were increased by $374.

After a show at the Joy Theater Tuesday evening and within about ten minutes after the crowd had passed out, a stream of people began returning, and Manager G.A. Harsh seemed to think a second show was expected, but he was soon reminded that the occasion was a genuine surprise in honor of his 51st birthday.

Mrs. Flora Yokes, who is employed at the home of Frank Pooler, pierced her hand with a hat pin a few days ago and blood poisoning has since set in. She is now at Chippewa Falls.

The Soo Line is offering Homeseekers’ Fares to North Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Western Canada on sale the first and third Tuesdays until November 1916. Colonists’ Fares are on sale daily to Western Canada, North Pacific and California. Settlers’ Fares to Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan on sale April 4, 11, 18 and 25, 1916.
