Colfax Community Girl Scouts held a “Thinking Day” dinner February 28 at Colfax Elementary. Troop 244 dressed as scouts from different countries and greeted guests in the language of that country.

According to Colfax Police Chief Pete Gehring, businesses in Colfax have had a large increase in the number of non-sufficient funds and closed account checks.

Residents on Viking Drive presented a petition to the Colfax Village Board asking that snowmobiles not be allowed in the neighborhood. Permission had previously been given to fill in a gap in the county snowmobile trail system.

The Colfax Village Board accepted the low bid of $4,125.64 from Meridean Siding and Light Construction of Rock Falls to construct the new concrete stage at the Colfax Fairgrounds.

Kris Klukas, daughter of Debi and Gary Klukas, was elected high school secretary for Region One of the Wisconsin Association for Student Councils. Shawn Keltner, son of Bev and Jim Keltner, was elected junior high president for Region One of WASC.

A total of 50 people attended a special meeting of the Colfax Village Board March 16 during which a representative for the state Department of Natural Resources said Colfax would be “stupid” to spend money on remodeling the wastewater treatment plant and should build a new lagoon system.

The Colfax Cub Scouts held their annual Pinewood Derby March 15. First place was Mitchell Bergeson; second place was Jamie Johnson; third place was Kelly Morse.

Pork roast was selling for 89 cents a pound at the IGA, while pork steak was 99 cents a pound at the Southside Grocery. Ice cream was $2.89 for a five-quart pail at Southside, but was $2.99 for five quarts at IGA.

In the village of Colfax, $253.90 was collected for the Heart Fund Drive headed by Mrs. Gerald Schwartz. She was assisted by Mrs. Orie Obermueller; Mrs. William Ellingson; Mrs. Clifford Peterson; Mrs. Reuben Melgaard; Mrs. Lloyd Hainstock; and Mrs. Julian Logslett.

Mark Fjelsted, Dover, Del., AFB, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ausman Fjelsted, has been promoted to lieutenant colonel and has received a medal for flying cargo into Saigon.

Tom Harstad, son of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Harstad, received a $25 U.S. Savings Bond in the Elk’s Leadership Contest. Winners were selected by their faculty members from a 13-school area and were chosen for their leadership. Tom will be entered in the state contest.

In the all regional first team picked by the sports staff of the Eau Claire Leader, Leo Pecore of Colfax was placed at the guard position. Among the honorable mentions were two more Colfax players, Clyde Prince and Don Hammer, forwards.

Singers from the village and immediate area around Colfax will present the third annual Easter Cantata at the high school Palm Sunday evening, March 18 at 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome to hear the presentation of sacred music under the direction of Vernon Iverson.

Mrs. and Mrs. Mendus Western are the new owners and managers of the Colfax Gamble Store, having made the purchase from Clarence Dehn early in February.

The Colfax Store Co. has taken over the P. Nooney & Co. store business at Wheeler and will continue the same in his old stand under the name of “The Wheeler Store.” Charles Sahlie will have charge.

Egbert Kewin of Dallas pleaded guilty to the charge of selling booze in dry territory and had to dig down in his jeans for $150 as a fine, besides cost of action.

The Colfax Store Co. is offering 200 yards of fine lace at 2 cents per yard.

A Shadow Social is to be given at the school house in District No. 2, Town of Colfax, tomorrow (Saturday) evening beginning at 8 o’clock. Ladies please bring cake. — Minnie Radle, Teacher.

A number of friends of Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Kinney gathered at the Joy Theatre last Monday and gave this estimable young couple a proper farewell entertainment ‘ere their departure for Eau Claire. Their household goods were sent from here the first of the week, and Mr. and Mrs. Kinney and little child followed on Wednesday.
