Despite the rumors about the future of the Downing Post Office, the post office will not be closing. They relocated the one route that is in the post office to Boyceville. The route driver will not be delivering mail in Downing.

The start of the New Year brings a change in Menomonie: a new official name of the medical center’s hospital and clinic campus, Red Cedar Medical Center – Mayo Health System. The names Red Cedar Clinic and Myrtle Werth Hospital will be retired.

The Dunn County Sheriff’s Dept. is attempting to locate a 53-year-old male, Douglas I. Poach,  missing from New Haven Township.

Dion and Lori Klinger and their children have been forced to live with relatives following a sewer backup into the basement of their Maple Street home in Glenwood City.

At a press conference Monday morning, Dunn County Sheriff Robert Zebro announced that a drug sting operation conducted by his department in conjunction with several others, was just about complete. Since last Wednesday, authorities arrested 22 for sale and possession of marijuana, hallucinogenic mushrooms and cocaine in Dunn County. Warrants are out for the arrest of eight others.

The first snowstorm of the season left five inches Friday night. Warm temperatures on Monday and a little rain made roads and walks very icy.

In another special meeting Monday night, the Glenwood City School board decided that they will formulate a community committee, or task force, to help them with the direction they want to take regarding the district’s facilities.

For a second time this winter a Glen Hills Watershed dam has held back the flood waters and Tiffany Creek flowed harmlessly though the City of Glenwood. The annual meeting of the watershed association will be held tonight.

The annual Forage Crop show and meeting was held at the Glenwood City high school last Wednesday. The top award went to Tom Ross, of Glenwood City, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Ross, a high school vo-ag student, for his exhibit of baled hay. Tom received a first place cash award of $3.00 and travelling trophy award.

Fire of undetermined origin last week Wednesday evening destroyed the barn and 80 feeder pigs on the H. G. Veldhouse farm just west of Cylon on Highway S.

Duane H. Ahlf, superintendent of the schools here, will be the speaker at the next regular supper meeting of the Glenwood City Community Club. His subject will be school taxes and he will also be able to answer any questions.

The annual meeting of the Glenwood City Co-op Services will be held at the Glenwood City high school auditorium Saturday afternoon, January 28, beginning at 1 p.m.

A By-laws committee of District I of the Farmers Union, consisting of Burnett, Barron, Polk, Douglas and Washburn counties met at Spooner on Thursday, Jan. 19 and recommended changing some by-laws. The proposed changes will be available for review before voting in February.

On Tuesday Agent W. H. Tallmadge formally opened Glenwood City’s fine new depot, and its handsome interior appearance has been the object of admiration ever since.

Harold H. Johnston last week resigned his position in St. Paul in order to devote his time to business interests in this city.  He and his brother Carver will begin remodeling the east half of the building occupied by Hagberg’s furniture store, preparatory to starting a general merchandising business therein.

The first 1921 Wisconsin Automobile license plates are being distributed. They have black figures on a gray background.

Budgets for 1981 were accepted for the Boyceville Area Fire Department and the Boyceville Area Ambulance Service at the annual meeting held Jan. 26. For the ambulance service, the revenues and expenditures are expected to balance at $16,110. The proposed budget total for the Fire Department will be $20,195.

In a battle for a chance to run the championship flight of the Jan. 24 Pinewood Derby, Boyceville Cub Scouts Kevin Lagerstrom and Robbie Bodsberg’s cars went back to the starting line about half a dozen times before Bodsberg’s car was given the edge.

Al Palmquist – a speaker, author and crusader who has been labeled as ‘the most unusual cop in the country’  and a ‘crusader for riotousness’ will speak at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Glenwood City high school gym. He will discuss issues to help parents understand and effectively fight dangers their children face.
