Robert “Bob” Fischer, age 70, of Stone Lake, WI and formerly of Boyceville, WI passed away on Friday, July 17 with his family by his side.
Robert Nicholas Fischer was born December 15, 1944 in Redwood Falls, MN the son of Edward and Margaret (Lensing) Fischer. He was raised in Wabasso, MN and graduated from St. Anne’s Catholic High School in 1962. Bob attended Willmar State Junior College and Mankato State University in Minnesota, the Department of Defense Air Intelligence School in Denver, Colorado and The Bank Administration Institute at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Bob joined the United States Air Force on September 20, 1963. He served at Otis Air Force Base, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and at Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand. While in the Air Force he received several awards, including The Air Force Commendation Medal. Bob served until his honorable discharge in August of 1967.
From 1968-1972 Bob worked for the Industrial Credit Company, one year as a loan officer in Willmar, MN and three years as District Manager in Breckenridge, MN. Robert began working for National Bank of Boyceville, WI in 1972. He was appointed Executive Vice President/CEO in 1987. In 1999, Bob accepted a position as Vice Chairman/President/CEO of the Independence, WI State Bank and its investment subsidiary, Northern Financial Investments. Bob retired on June 30th, 2008 and moved to his Whitefish Lake home in Stone Lake, WI. In retirement, Bob enjoyed working part time as a commercial loan officer for Hayward, WI Community Credit Union.
Bob was very active in community organizations. Notable achievements were his work on the Boyceville, WI School Board and the building of Tiffany Creek Elementary School; the Boyceville Airport Booster Club and the expansion of the airport, and his work as Commissioner of the Chippewa Valley Regional Airport, Eau Claire. Bob held many offices in the Wisconsin Bankers Association, serving as its president in 1995. Bob also served on the board of directors for St. Luke’s Catholic Church from 1972-1981. Throughout his youth and adult life, Bob was an avid golfer. He was a licensed pilot and greatly enjoyed flying and all things related to aviation.
Robert is survived by his wife of 33 years, Shirley; three sons, Robert (DeeDee) of Menomonie, WI, Steven (Yvonne Carter) of Wheeler, WI, Daniel (Maurita Sweeney) of New Richmond, WI; five grandchildren, Alycia, Savanah, Tiana, Mikaela and Afton; four sisters, Patricia Fischer of Wabasso, MN, Joyce McFadden of Warren, MI, Carol Lanz of Wabasso, MN, Joan (Verl) Squire of Omaha, NE; four brothers, Richard (Peggy) of Warren, OR, Michael (Fran) of Blaine, MN, Kevin (Lorna) of Woodbury, MN, Edward James of Wabasso, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Jean Guy.
There will be a visitation for Robert from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22nd, at Bratley Funeral Service in Hayward, WI. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 24th at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Wabasso, MN with a visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the St. Anne’s Cemetery in Wabasso.
