JEANNINE (SLATER) UHRIG

Jeannine (Slater) Uhrig, age 78, of Black River Falls, WI passed away early on June 18, 2015 from complications due to stroke.

In one of the hottest summers on record, Jeannine was born in River Falls, WI. She grew up in western St. Croix county, graduating from Hudson High School and attending the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for Early Elementary Education and Music. Jeannine loved children and spent more than 40 years teaching or caring for them.

While at the university, she met her husband, Robert. Jeannine and Bob had four children.

Their growing family spent time living in Baldwin, WI, Streator, IL, Colfax, WI and Black River Falls, WI.

Enthusiastic about music, Jeannine will be remembered by many for leading children in song. Her teaching career was split between Colfax School District and in Sand Creek, WI.

Jeannine remained dedicated to education following her retirement, most recently with her involvement in the MOPS preschool program in Black River Falls. Her children and grandchildren, instilled with the high importance of education, will carry on this legacy for generations to come.

Jeannine was passionate about supporting the lives of girls and young women through the Girl Scouts of America. She spent more than 20 years as a leader and trainer, where she was hugely influential in developing local Girl Scout and Red Cedar Association programs, leading trips to Washington DC, Mexico and the World’s Fair. Jeannine’s rich civic life was furthered by active participation in Women’s Club, the Church Choir, United Methodist Women, Homemakers and Prayer group.

Jeannine was preceded in death by her parents: William Slater, E. Gail (Gillihan) Slater; grandparents: Alexander Slater, Mary (McDiarmid) Slater, Thomas Gillihan and Ethel (Williams) Gillihan; and by an infant daughter.

Jeannine is survived by her husband of 58 years, as well as children: Allison (Peter), Barbara (James), Bradley (Ruby), and Steven (Giles); grandchildren: Jerad (Karly), Erin (Dustin), Nickisha (Daniel), Miranda, Mitchel (Danielle), Zachary (Mei Qin Chen), and Amanda; great grandchildren: Beau, Brynnleigh, Adam, Aaron, Deamyn, and 2 on the way; siblings: G. William (Mary Jane), and C. Joanne; numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at the Black River Falls United Methodist Church 100 N 4th St, Black River Falls, WI 54615.
