The Menomonie Optimist Club provides the Boyceville High School teaching staff with the opportunity to recognize the achievements and efforts of an outstanding senior student. The selected student is then recognized as the Youth of the Month.
Abbey Bird was selected to represent Boyceville High School as Youth of the Month for April. Abbey is the daughter of Steve and Jolene Bird of Boyceville.
The program statement from the Menomonie Optimist Club describes the qualities and attributes that made Abbey a great choice.
“The purpose of the Optimist Club is to develop optimism as a philosophy of life: to promote an active interest in good government and civic affairs, to aid and encourage the development of youth, in the belief that the giving of one’s self in service to others will advance the well-being of man, his community, and the world.”
To recognize her accomplishments there was an Awards Banquet held in Menomonie on April 15th. Abbey’s parents, Steve and Jolene Bird, and Boyceville High School Teacher Jennifer Bignell attended the Awards Banquet. Mrs. Bignell had the opportunity to introduce Abbey and talk about her achievements, both in school and our community. Abbey has been a valuable leader, supportive team member and a positive role model for her peers. Mrs. Bignell is the Student Council Advisor and has counted on Abbey’s leadership for the past four years. Abbey has served as both a Student Council Member and Class President all four years of high school. Abbey has been very active in athletics playing Basketball, Volleyball and has been a Track team member. In addition to her leadership and athletics Abbey has supported her school with academic extracurriculars like Science Olympiad, Quiz Bowl and Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) competitions. Abbey has also given back to her community. She has played an important role in mentoring young athletes at youth camps and has even coached a Volleyball team. Abbey has supported the Coaches versus Cancer fundraiser that takes place during the Basketball season to raise awareness for the American Cancer Society. She has also taken a Mission Trip to New Orleans to help with community service projects and disaster relief. Her academic focus, service to her community and commitment to leadership has made Abbey a wonderful choice for the Optimist Award. Congratulations to Abbey on being selected as an outstanding senior!
