CLIFFORD ALBERT PETERSON

Clifford Albert Peterson, 93, of Colfax, passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2015, at the Colfax Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Cliff was born on August 29, 1921, in the town of Grant, to Martin and Selma (Tollefson) Peterson.

Cliff was the oldest of eight children. He graduated from Colfax High School and worked on a farm with his dad and uncles. They traveled around the Colfax area with a portable feed grinder doing custom grinding for farmers. Cliff wanted to attend Stout Teacher’s College with the aspiration of becoming a math teacher (which he eventually was, though not a paid teacher, by helping his three children through high school math).

Clifford entered the U.S. Navy during World War II and served on the USS Minneapolis. After eight months, he received word that his father had died suddenly of a heart attack and he was being sent home to take over the family farm. At a social gathering of neighbors, Cliff met Phyllis Olson. Two years later, they were married at the Lutheran Church Parsonage.

Cliff and Phyllis farmed north of Colfax. Their three children were born while they lived on this farm. In 1956, they sold the dairy cows and Cliff started work at Hovre-Wiseman Chevrolet as a mechanic. He bought into the company which was then called Hovre-Peterson Chevrolet around 1957 and continued working there until 1960, when he began working at People’s State Bank in Colfax. Cliff retired after 23 in the banking business. He enjoyed working with and meeting many wonderful friends over the years.

He was a member of the Russell Toycen American Legion Post 131.

Cliff is survived by his wife of 67 years, Phyllis, who still caused his eyes to light up every time she came into his room; three children, Pamela (John) Arntson, Jeffrey (Kaaren) Peterson and Craig (Terri) Peterson; sister, Ellen Luer; sister-in-law, Minda Nazier; brother-in-law, Richard Thomas; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Clifford was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Selma (Tollefson) Peterson; Melvin and Ella (Oleson) Olson; two brothers, Sigurd and Erling Peterson; and four sisters, Olive Marsac, Ruth Krueger, Evelyn Oleson and Sylvia Thomas.

Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m., on Monday, January 19, 2015, at Sampson Funeral Home, 1017 E. Railroad Ave. in Colfax, and again one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2015, at Holden Lutheran Church, in the town of Grant, with Pastor Bob Schoenknecht officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in Holden Lutheran Cemetery.
