Joyce M. Hopkins, age 73, of Boyceville, passed away Thursday, May 14, 2014 at The Neighbors of Dunn County in Menomonie.

Joyce was born January 19, 1941 in Woodstock, Illinois to Eldie & Alberta (Utesch) Hopkins. She grew up on the family farm and always enjoyed driving tractor. Joyce was very mechanically inclined and always tried her best to fix everything that needed repairs.

She graduated from Hebron High School in Hebron, IL and went on to Whitewater College to receive her teaching degree. The first year of her teaching career brought her to Colby, WI, where she taught physical education. In 1967 she moved to Boyceville, WI; teaching physical education and math. Joyce became the first woman in the State of Wisconsin as Athletic Director for Boyceville Community Schools (1977-1986). Joyce retired from teaching in 1998, but still continued her duties as DSC Commissioner for the Dunn-St. Croix Conference until 2005. In 1988 she was the recipient of the National Coaching Award, presented by the National Federation of High School Athletics and the Women’s Sports Foundation in New York City. She served on the boards for both the Dunn County Department of Human Services and the Glenhaven Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Joyce enjoyed traveling, hiking in Utah, fishing and spending time at the cabin. She was an avid sports fan for all of the local and state sporting events which included the Packers, Wisconsin Badgers and the Twins. Her appreciation for baseball was also displayed with her enormous collection of baseball cards.

Her true passion for children and their education was always a top priority and always put the needs of others before her own. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Joyce is survived by her sister Mary Sue (Lee) Ward, niece Rebecca (Adam) Klein, nephew Jacob (Karina) Ward, great niece Olivia Klein, great nephew Logan Klein, and her close friends Lois Oakland and her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents as well as many aunts, uncles and family friend Eldon Oakland.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 19, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boyceville with Pastor Brad Peterson officiating, with burial will take place at Tiffany Cemetery in Boyceville.
